    FIFA 11 continued its run this year as the most popular sports game in the world, becoming the fastest selling sports title ever. In the US it has been gaining steam the past few years and broke through in its first month of sales with its best performance ever finishing in fifth place. The game continues to provide a realistic experience along with a wide array of features that help it appeal to even non-soccer fans. (more…)...

    Madden faces far and away the heaviest scrutiny of any sports game franchise. Various boundaries placed on the series have kept the game from really breaking out of the perception that each year simply brings about a marginal upgrade. Madden 10 was an excellent attempt even exceeding many expectations but Madden 11 failed to follow-up on that.     As the most nontraditional game in the rankings, Kinect Sports seemed an unlikely candidate all the way up through release. Motion gaming was not high on the list of desire when it came to sports offerings and the Kinect hardware was being questioned as to how viable its performance would be in the real world. Despite that Kinect Sports turned out to be a surprising source of pure fun providing good variety, options, and accuracy making for a very unique experience. (more…)...

    Perhaps due to reaction garnered by MLB 10: The Show the series is making some significant changes going into next year in an attempt to provide a feeling of advancement. Though The Show has remained amongst the best in sports gaming in terms of quality it has seemed to settle in and avoid taking any risks. Doing so made some sense...consumers were happy and sales numbers were rising. Despite that it has become more heavily scrutinized especially as The Show acts as a quasi-exclusive title. (...

    The NHL series from EA Sports has been one of the most highly regarded this generation. With NHL 09 in particular the franchise had a resurgence and became more mainstream than many would have anticipated possible. The game began to reach those not necessarily fans of the NHL. It captured the #2 spot with NHL 09 but then didn't make the list with NHL 10 due to a push towards milking consumers through downloadable content and a lack of intriguing upgrades.     A good arcade style game can provide great entertainment value and act as a much needed change of pace. In the past few years games such as The BIGS, Blitz: The League, NBA Street, and Madden Arcade have found their way into the end of year lists. 2010 however was a down year for the arcade game, and almost by default NBA Jam claims the #10 spot in the countdown.
