Sherlock Holmes arrives for the holidays as one of the most anticipated movies of the season. This is due in large part to the charisma of Robert Downey Jr. who plays the famed private investigator as Guy Ritchie attempts a reboot of the story. Unlike some other franchises which have gone with origin stories, the characters in Sherlock are already established as they take on a new and challenging case that has the fate of England in the balance. One has to ask when reviewing a movie what factors need to be considered. Is it just the quality of the film in terms of the story and acting? Is it the emotion it invokes? Is it the pure entertainment factor? Really all that varies on the particular movie at hand. Avatar though is completely unique and really doesn't fit into any typical category. No film has ever been as ambitious yet it totally pulls it off. James Cameron waited years for the technology to arrive that could deliver his v...

Up in the Air was first screened back in September at the Telluride. The buzz coming out of the there propelled it on a path similar to that of last year's Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire which had also debuted at the film festival. Ever since the first reports on Up in the Air the anticipation for its arrival and the talk around its own chances at the Academy Awards has been building. (more…)...
  • Review: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Though it is based on the Ronald Dahl children's book Fantastic Mr. Fox really isn't targeted at a younger crowd. If anything it skews older in its style of humor while still being appropriate for all audiences. This is one of the rare movies that I could envision parents really appreciating on their own level while their kids are still kept interested. It may have a tough time selling itself because it is unique and that is unfortunate. Word-of-mouth however will be strong and hopefully tha...

Director Roland Emmerich is well known for his penchant to wreck the earth in most spectacular ways possible. Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and Godzilla are previous attempts at just that. He returns with 2012 as series of events result to the destruction of the world as we know it. The 12/21/2012 date is famous because the Mayan calendar ends on that day leading some believe that it signifies the end of the world. (more…)...

I generally tend to enjoy the understated dry comedies and that is what I expected from The Men Who Stare At Goats. While it tries to be just that the story trudges along with reliance on flashbacks for much of the progression. Many of the situations seem inserted for the purpose of comic relief yet unfortunately they never really deliver on it. (more…)...
  • Review – Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

After five seasons Battlestar Galactica completed its run earlier this year. Because an end date was known ahead of time everything was wrapped up really well and it had a very thought-provoking conclusion. That hasn't stopped the Battlestar universe from continuing on however. The SyFy series Caprica will premiere in January and that show debuted with a movie a few months ago. It is essentially the origin story centered on humanity and the creation of the Cylons. Out now on DVD and Blu-ray...

I've always been drawn to revenge movies, those where the main character has nothing to lose and goes on a rampage. Thus is the premise of Law Abiding Citizen as Clyde Shelton (played by Gerard Butler) sees his wife and daughter killed. The prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) cuts a deal that results in one of the two murderers facing the death penalty. The other was flipped to ensure that but in doing so received only a few years. For Clyde this is far from being the justice he sought and tha...
