Other than Iron Man 2 the summer season has been filled with a slew of disappointing releases. Another film that would seem to have the potential to fall into that category arrived this weekend with The A-Team. The first theatrical take on the popular 1980s television series brings together a group of Army Rangers that are framed for murder and theft and set out to clear their names. Surprisingly The A-Team ends up being one of the more fun films to release in what has been a relatively dull s...

Splice is one of the most difficult movies I've ever attempted to review. Even now as I write this I feel largely conflicted and uncertain of any sort of final verdict other than having found it strangely entertaining. This is not a conventional film to say the least and that I really liked about it. However in the process it takes some turns which are very uncomfortable for the audience. While it is being marketed along the lines of a horror movie I wouldn't describe it as such. It is more of...

There is a deep history of failed video game adaptations but with the backing of Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney Prince of Persia arrives with possibly the best shot of breaking the trend. The film follows a prince who is set up for the murder of the king and goes on the run hoping to expose the true killer who has his eye on ruling the land. He is joined by a rival princess who knows the secrets behind a dagger that can reverse time. While Prince of Persia isn't likely to blow anyone away ...

Get Him to the Greek is helmed by Nicholas Stoller as a follow-up to his directorial debut with Forgetting Sarah Marshall. A sequel of sorts it focuses on the character of Aldous Snow as played by the eccentric Russell Brand. Unfortunately the movie takes on a completely different tone than FSM becoming more of an in-your-face comedy and in doing so bypasses the delivery of a genuine story and enjoyable characters. The most anticipated movie of the summer is nearly here as Iron Man 2 hits theaters on Friday. As with any follow-up to a hugely successful film the expectations are off the charts. Can Iron Man 2 live up to them and avoid the potential for disappointment? The simple answer is yes, it absolutely has achieved at least that much. (more…)...
  • Review: A Nightmare on Elm Street

Several horror franchises have successfully rebooted over the past few years by offering an updated stylistic look and fresh take on the stories. The Platinum Dunes production company has been behind a few of those including Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. A Nightmare on Elm Street will not be able to lay claim to a similar feat as the others. Jackie Earle Haley did a good enough job as a replacement for Robert Englund in the role of Freddy Krueger. However the other performanc...
  • Review: The Losers

The Losers is based off a comic, but make no mistake, this is no Kick-Ass.  Carrying a PG-13 rating the action is more centered on the usual explosions and gun fights and the language is tempered. Most notably the movie just breezes through with little in the way of actual conflict or concern. The Losers is the definition of underwhelming. It takes no chances, goes down a predictable path, and is completely forgettable. (more…)...
  • Review: How to Train Your Dragon

Dreamworks Animation has delivered their best movie yet with How to Train Your Dragon. It's is a shame that it won't get the same attention as a Pixar film would, as Dragon is of that very caliber. What seems to be the common thread is the emotional attachment to the characters and their plights. Dragon delivers in this regard by providing a fun story that doesn't dumb itself down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. (more…)...
