THQ has reached an agreement to extend the license to produce official video games for the UFC through 2018. The news comes on the same day that a competitor in EA Sports MMA releases. Surely not a coincidence. There had been some speculation that UFC might let the current deal expire and explore other options including EA. There were rumblings of dissatisfaction from Dana White based on how THQ handled the last edition of the game and is disappointing sales performance. This year UFC 20...

Ever since a surprise onside kick was used in the Super Bowl and its success cited as a big reason why the Saints were able to beat the Colts its absence in Madden has been notable. This has come up once again as there have been three attempts at surprise onside kicks in the last two weeks of NFL games. There seems to be an argument against the implementation of surprise onside kicks in Madden and it sounds an awful lot like what was said about the Wildcat before it was finally added. There...

Today NBC announced they have given back nine orders to The Event, Outsourced, and Law & Order: Los Angeles. Chase and Undercovers are rumored to be getting similar pick-ups as well. None of NBC's new shows this season are performing particularly well. Chase and Undercovers are at risk of cancellation so this news comes as somewhat of a surprise. The other three are doing well enough by the network's standards but they were unable to produce the breakout hit that they were looking for. ...

NBA 2K11 has now been out for two weeks allowing plenty of time to assess what the game has done well and where it fell short. While there are certainly some issues to look at for an upcoming patch the game delivered in just about every way imaginable. Here are what I perceive to be the hits and misses for NBA 2K11. (more…)...

This summer EA Sports officially unveiled their long rumored fitness game featuring the NFL. Known as EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp it is slated to release for the Wii on November 16th. Since that initial announcement there have been little info or promotion on the game but a feature list and trailer recently arrived. For now NFL Training Camp is exclusive to the Wii. Considering the 360 and PS3 have their own motion based systems now with Kinect and Move it would seem likely that it w...
  • Jackass 3D Breaks Fall Box Office Record

    Posted October 17th, 2010 at 2:50 pm 1 Comment »
Soaring past all expectations Jackass 3D turned in the biggest opening weekend for a September or October release in history with $50 million. Industry expectations had pegged the film to make just over $30 million for the weekend but it crushed on Friday alone with $22 million. Jackass 3D certainly benefited by the higher ticket prices that come with 3D but it was more about the extra appeal it provided. The movie was sold on the 3D premise and that it would enhance the experience. It was ...

The Line Drive is a weekly collection of news, links, and updates that didn’t necessarily warrant their own postings. The next Madden 11 patch, slated for November, will include a fix for online disconnects that have been occurring at an increased rate since the last patch. Peter Moore sees a future where FIFA wouldn't be disc based but rather a persistently updated online world. That is still a ways off from happening but the direction many sports games could go. Re...
