In Second Weekend Toy Story 3 Easily Tops Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise
While the two new openers performed pretty much in line with expectations it was last weekend's winner Toy Story 3 that again topped the box office. Grown Ups turned in the typical Adam Sandler first weekend and despite a mediocre start Knight and Day still has the potential to be a success.
After just 10 days Toy Story 3 has already raked in $226.5 million after a $59 million second weekend. The 46% drop was higher than most Pixar films see however it also opened much bigger than any ever ...
Toy Story 3 Breaks June Opening Record
Both Toy Story 3 and Jonah Hex exceeded most expectations this weekend, but for completely different reasons. TS3 broke the record for biggest June opening ever while Jonah bombed even worse than anyone had figured it would.
For Toy Story 3 most predictions fell in the $85-$100 million range but I felt that the nostalgia factor and appeal to the older crowd would push it over the top and predicted $110 million. Pixar had never opened a film over $70 million so there seemed to be this sense ...
Karate Kid Stuns With Huge Opening
The two new openers were expected to finish one-two at the box office this weekend but opinion was split on which one would come out on top. It ended up being a knockout as The Karate Kid exceeded all expectations and The A-Team came in closer to the level pre-release tracking indicated it would. Both reboots were questioned along the way but seem to have pleased audiences despite mixed reviews.
Industry expectations had The Karate Kid and The A-Team finishing with around $30 million each. ...
Shrek Wins Another Weekend By Default
Despite being considered a pretty big disappointment Shrek Forever After has won its third straight weekend this time pulling in $25 million with the competition relatively flat. The four new openers really didn't even provide much of a challenge. The box office crown will finally change hands next week though with the release of The A-Team and The Karate Kid.
The strongest openers were Get Him to the Greek and Killers with $17.4 million and $16.1 million respectively. Greek came in right a...
New Openers Disappoint at Box Office Over Memorial Day Weekend
Two pictures with high expectations debut to relatively flat openings. Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia came in below expectations as Shrek Forever After won for a second straight weekend. For the three days Shrek took in $43.3 million, SATC2 $32.1 million, and Prince of Persia $30.2 million. They'll get the benefit of the Monday holiday tacked on as well but for a Memorial Day frame at the box office it was one of the slowest in 15 years.
Shrek Forever After fell 39% from last weeke...
Shrek 4 and MacGruber Severely Disappoint at the Box Office
It was a down weekend at the box office with both new openings coming in way under industry expectations. Though the Shrek brand had been tarnished by the last release it was still thought to be strong enough especially considering a lack of competition and the opportunity to be buoyed by 3D ticket prices. Industry projections were were mostly in the $100 million range though some believed it could reach $130 million. It ended up taking in only $71.3 million.
It almost sounds unreasonable t...
Robin Hood Can’t Defeat Iron Man 2 in Weekend Box Office
Falling a heavy but not totally unanticipated 58% from last weekend Iron Man 2 topped the box office charts with $53 million. That takes its domestic total to $212 million after just 10 days. The sequel has not had quite the same word of mouth that drove the original. That one surprised many while the follow-up carried much heavier expectations.
Iron Man 2 is ahead by about $20 million compared to the original after the 10 days but the possibility remains that it will not end up out-grossin...
$52 Million Opening Day for Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 has made off with an estimated $52 million in its first day. That number includes the $7.5 million made from late Thursday midnight shows. The $52 million places it seventh on the list of highest opening day grosses. Based on these numbers the weekend take will likely finish right around $130 million. That would make it the fifth biggest opening weekend in history.
Industry expectations pegged IM2 in the $140-160 million range, giving it an outside shot of topping The Dark Knight...
