Varied Levels of Success at the Box Office for New Openers
It was a busy weekend at the box office where old action stars reigned supreme, a reliable female star opened a film to modest numbers, and a potential cult-classic couldn't gain any traction.
Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, which united numerous action stars of the past, resonated with a large segment of males looking for a straight big action offering. Despite primarily disappointing reviews (citing great action but poor acting and story) the crowd supported it leading it to the top...
The Other Guys Knocks Inception Out of Top Spot at Box Office
As expected The Other Guys came in #1 at the box office this weekend though slightly exceeding industry expectations. Inception, which had won its first three weekends, slipped to #2 but again held extremely well. The other new opener Step Up 3D had a decent opening but didn't reach the heights that the first two in the series had.
The Adam McKay directed The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, made $35.6 million. The movie had heavy promotion and even got primarily good re...
Inception Holds Off Schmucks For Another Weekend Victory
Inception keeps on rolling showing some terrific legs based on its great word of mouth. The Christopher Nolan film has won its third consecutive weekend at the box office. This time it outdid expectations by topping the Steve Carell-Paul Rudd comedy Dinner for Schmucks. The other two new openers, Cats and Dogs 2 and Charlie St. Cloud, performed decently but were likely disappointments for their respective studios who had higher expectations.
Pulling in another $27.5 million was good enough ...
Inception Holds Off Salt For Second Weekend Victory
After opening to a strong $62 million last weekend the focus turned to how the legs would be for Inception. That has now been answered with the film displaying the result of great word-of-mouth and increased awareness. Inception came in first at the box office for the second straight weekend pulling in a very impressive $43.5 million. That makes out to be a drop of just 30%. It has now collected over $143 million and worldwide is over $225 million. Those are huge numbers for an original film a...
Inception Opens Large While Sorcerer’s Apprentice Falters
Inception made $61.4 million this weekend exceeding most expectations. The Christopher Nolan project starring Leonardo DiCaprio (review here) opened at the high end of industry predictions which had pegged it as heading for a $40-60 million weekend. While its take won't stand out as a huge number on its own consider that it is the 10th highest grossing opening weekend for an original film in history. Avatar currently tops that list, with many people forgetting that its opening weekend was just...
Despicable Me Takes Box Office Crown From Twilight: Eclipse
Both new openers exceeded expectations at the box office this weekend. Despicable Me knocked The Twilight Saga: Eclipse out of the top spot while Predators also performed well finishing in third.
Despicable Me, the animated film from Universal, pulled in $60.1 million which is especially impressive given the limited number of 3D screens currently available. There are three 3D films out on the market right now. With a relatively low budget of just $69 million it is already a huge success.

Twilight: Eclipse and The Last Airbender Open Big Over July 4th Weekend
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opened to the top spot at the box office for the Fourth of July weekend. $69 million for the weekend brings its total to $161 million since opening on Wednesday. Compared to New Moon it actually has made $3 million less through the first five days of release. The Twilight series has astounding consistency. Though it doesn't pick up new fans along it completely sustains its very passionate fan base.
Despite absolutely horrid reviews The Last Airbender was able to m...
Twilight: Eclipse Breaks Opening Wednesday Record
Twilight: Eclipse has captured the record for a Wednesday opening having collected $68.5 million. $30 million of that came from midnight showings representing yet another record. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen had previously held the Wednesday record with its $62 million opening last year.
Eclipse did not, however, break the record for largest single day gross. That title will remain with the last film in the Twilight franchise as New Moon opened on a Friday to $72 million on the way...
