The top five films at the box office this weekend all finished within $5 million of each other. It was the Liam Neeson thriller Unknown that captured the top spot, while fellow openers I Am Number Four and Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son finished in second and fifth respectively. Liam Neeson showed he could open a thriller early in the year with 2009's Taken and Unknown played to a very similar audience. The ads for the film could have easily been mistaken as being a sequel. Taken opened ...

It was a tight race for the top spot at the box office this weekend as the Adam Sandler led Just Go With It faced off against the Justin Bieber biopic Never Say Never. The two other openers resulted in one hit and one disappointment. In first place it was Just Go With It which continues the consistent $30+ million openings that Sandler delivers as it finished with $31 million. Also typical with Sandler driven films has been the poor reviews that audiences ignore. Marketing was solid and inc...

Though it wasn't a blockbuster opening the R-rated comedy No Strings Attached was able to come out on top of the box office for the weekend. Headlined by Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher the film grossed $20.3 million on the highest per screen average. The number comes in line with expectations and when put up against a relatively light budget of $25 million it becomes an undeniable success. Reviews, as typical for comedies that push boundaries, were mixed but the marketing was strong enough...

Though it wasn't a spectacular opening weekend take The Green Hornet turned in results in line with expectations. The film was able to make $34 million for the three days and is expected to cross $40 million over the four day holiday weekend. The Green Hornet becomes the third highest opener in January history, trailing just Cloverfield and the 1997 re-release of Star Wars. Sony did their best to make the film feel like a summer blockbuster with a heavy marketing push. Reviews were mixed...

True Grit was able to overtake Little Fockers for the top spot at the box office this weekend. The only new release, Season of the Witch, came in third with a decent result considering how poorly the film is being received. The Coen Bros. western remake of True Grit came in #1 after two weeks of being the runner-up and in the process has crossed the $100 million mark. With $15 million this weekend it now sits at a total of $110 million. Budgeted at just $38 million the film becoming a mains...
  • Little Fockers Wins Holiday Weekend

Despite having made nearly $50 million in its five days of release Little Fockers is being viewed as a disappointment. It comes in well below the box office take of its predecessor Meet the Fockers which drew $70.5 million over the same stretch in 2004. Bad buzz, terrible reviews, and six years between films in a franchise that audiences had already grew tired of contributed to the drop. The reported $120 million budget is absurd but its opening and overseas returns will likely make it profita...
  • Tron Pulls Away With Weekend Victory

It was an easy win at the box office this weekend for Tron: Legacy though it didn't open as well as Disney had been wishing for. The film pulled in $43.6 million which is a solid take on a weekend that traditionally doesn't launch in blockbuster fashion and it could have good staying power through the holidays. However after a huge marketing campaign that stretched over multiple years and a $170 million budget the expectations were for much more. Over the past few months though tracking had sh...
  • Tangled Captures Top Spot from Harry Potter

The weekend that follows the Thanksgiving holiday stretch is typically one of the weakest of the year in terms of new releases and also holdover strength. That once again held true as only a single film, The Warrior's Way, opened in wide release. Meanwhile after having started #2 Tangled captured #1 as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 slid by it. So in its second weekend Tangled captures the crown after having been the runner-up its opening weekend, which is still a relatively r...
