As expected The Princess and the Frog captured the top spot at the box office this weekend. It was able to make $25 million which is right about in line with expectations. The Disney film appealed primarily to females and didn't have the benefit of being in 3D. It knocked The Blind Side out of #1 but that movie continues to drop at an astonishingly slow pace down only 22% from last weekend for $15 million more. It has now made $150 million since release. The other new entry was Invictus w...

As expected The Blind Side and New Moon came in 1-2 at the box office on Friday. Achieving what very few movies do, The Blind Side will reach the top spot for the weekend for the first time while in its third week of release. It is on pace to make about $20 million with New Moon pulling in near $15 million. Of the four new releases Brothers had the strongest take and appears headed to about $10 million. That is slightly higher than expectations and it should hold up well over coming weeks...

The Blind Side nearly knocked off New Moon as the number one movie at the box office over the weekend. New Moon pulled in $42.5 million which was down a stunning but not unanticipated 70%. In comparison The Blind Side shot up over 17% from its opening weekend for $40.1 million. That puts it at $100 million in just nine days of release while New Moon has collected $230 million in the same time frame. Of the three new movies that released wide on Thanksgiving it was Old Dogs that pulled in ...

The day before Thanksgiving tends to perform only slightly better than a normal weekday. Thanksgiving is generally slow but then the day after is one of the busiest of the year. On Wednesday three carryovers in New Moon, The Blind Side, and 2012 topped the new offerings and that will likely continue through the weekend. Opening yesterday was the martial-arts movie Ninja Assassin which debuted with $3.3 million, the comedy Old Dogs which starts with $3.1 million, and the stop-motion animat...

It may have broken the record for grosses from midnight showings and for a single day but it could not capture the opening weekend record. The Twilight Saga: New Moon was able to draw $140.7 million through Sunday making it the third biggest opening ever. It falls only behind The Dark Knight with $158 million and Spider-man 3 with $151 million. Everyone was prepared for a huge weekend from New Moon but most were looking for between $85 million and $105 million. There was a smaller drop-of...

The Twilight Saga: New Moon has already broken records for advance sales and for midnight showings. Now it can lay claim to owning the largest opening day in history. The Dark Knight was tops with $67.2 million however New Moon pulled in $72.7 million on Friday. That number includes the $26.3 million that was made from the midnight showings. While New Moon is expected to be front-loaded it is on its way to a massive opening. It will now surely become the largest November opening surpassin...

The numbers are in from Friday and 2012 pulled in 23.7 million. While the movie will be somewhat front-loaded that is still a great opening day take. 2012 now looks to be on its way to a 61 million opening weekend. It will end up as a big success despite the risky 200 million budget as disaster movies always draw well overseas. Worldwide it may gross 150 million or more just this weekend. Industry expectations for the opening weekend at one time were for 60+ but had been scaled back somew...

This weekend felt as though it represented the unofficial kick-off for the holiday movie season. As expected A Christmas Carol will come in first place as it made 9 million on Friday. Featuring Jim Carrey voicing multiple characters and boosted by 3D theaters it now looks to be headed towards about 32 million for the weekend. That is below industry expectations which were pegged to be around 40 million and even below my tempered prediction of 36. Ultimately it may be a little early for a Chr...
