A new season of baseball is once again upon us and on this episode of the Press Row Podcast we look both forward to MLB The Show 18 and back through the history of baseball video games. First it’s a discussion of this week’s reveal of new features for The Show. Then each panelist counts down through their top five all-time features from baseball video games. The picks are varied and span over 30 years, represent different types of games, features that have proven influential to this day, and those that were simply most memorable.

  • MLB The Show 18 developer stream dives into Batting Stance Creator and Practice Mode

This week’s developer stream for MLB The Show 18 follows up on the news of earlier this week – the addition of a Batting Stance Creator and rain delays in Franchise Mode – while going into a number of other areas as well. Included among them are more throwback uniforms, various authenticity improvements made to stadiums, five new batting cameras, and the reveal of Frank Thomas as one of the new legends this year.

  • NBA Live 18 added to EA Access Vault

Recent sales that have taken the price of NBA Live 18 down to $7.50 and even as low now as $4.50 made it obvious that an addition to the EA Access Vault on Xbox One would be happening sooner rather than later. Live 19 is now the second EA Sports game from 2017 to have reached the Vault joining Madden NFL 18 as being available in full to all subscribers.

EA Access is currently exclusive to Xbox One with Sony declining to offer the service on PS4 despite its remarkable value. EA executives have hinted that may change this year however. For $30 a year or $5 month-to-month, members get unlimited access to the back library of EA games on the console which in addition to NBA Live 18 and Madden NFL 18 now includes all earlier XB1 sports titles plus the likes of Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Skate 3, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Star Wars Battlefront, and many others. There’s also the 10 hour trials with every EA game that begin five days before release and 10% savings on all digital purchases whether it be the actual games or microtransactions within them.

The arrival of NBA Live 18 to the Vault comes at practically the same point as occurred with NBA Live 15 three years ago, and sooner than NBA Live 16 which was a May addition to the service the following year. It has been clear going back to even before release that EA aggressively desired getting the game into as many hands as possible to keep hope alive that the series will show growth when it comes to NBA Live 19 and beyond.

The first EA Sports game from 2017 has now reached the Vault in EA Access. Madden NFL 18 was added today making it available in full to all subscribers.

EA Access is currently exclusive to Xbox One with Sony declining to offer the service on PS4 despite its remarkable value. EA executives have hinted that may change this year however. For $30 a year or $5 month-to-month, members get unlimited access to the back library of EA games on the console which in addition to Madden NFL 18 now includes all earlier XB1 sports titles plus the likes of Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Skate 3, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Star Wars Battlefront, and many others. There’s also the 10 hour trials with every EA game that begin five days before release and 10% savings on all digital purchases whether it be the actual games or microtransactions within them.

The arrival of Madden to the Vault comes at practically the same point it did last year. In addition to potential new subs and hoping to pull in some new fans to buy Madden NFL 19, those introduced to the game for the first time without having to pay for it may be more inclined to invest in its Ultimate Team mode. NBA Live 18 may be the next to be added, but Madden going in first likely means it won’t happen this month.

The themed promotional weeks for MLB The Show 18 continue with this one focused on what’s long been referred to as “the little things.” Some of the additions for this year however really aren’t “little” at all, including a new batting stance creator and the oft-requested rain delays and postponements for Franchise Mode. Also touched on in the video are improved home run and team specific celebrations and improved pitching animations. All these things and more will be discussed and shown further in the developer stream being held on Thursday.
