There’s little doubt in recent years that Franchise Mode has taken a back seat in most sports games. MLB The Show is one of those which hasn’t done much to progress the mode and this year is facing additional backlash over the decision to remove Online Franchise.
Today the full details on what to expect out of Franchise Mode have been revealed and there really isn’t that much new to go over. The main addition called “Phases” assists by surfacing important information. It’s possible something more will be revealed through the developer stream on the subject but otherwise that’s about all there is, which is pretty disheartening coming from the official blog they titled “Everything New in Franchise Mode.” Read more
Release of the eagerly anticipated Super Mega Baseball 2 still hasn’t been narrowed down from the vague “spring” target (unfortunately it looks like it may be later rather than sooner in that March 20-June 21 window) but at least some movement has been made with announcements today. A closed beta will begin soon on Xbox One and the online features being introduced in the sequel to one of the best sports games of recent years have now been revealed.
The beta will launch within the next two weeks and will be active selectively over a period of weeks. It is only being run on Xbox One, leaving out those on PlayStation 4 and PC. It will feature a limited experience that includes exhibition games and online games with the Pennant Race mode. Read the terms of the beta and sign-up to get involved here.
The most glaring omission from the original Super Mega Baseball was that of online play. That has been rectified in the sequel which includes the ability to play any of the modes including Season together with up to three friends online, Pennant Race mode which offers limited-time leaderboard competitions, cross-platform play between Xbox One/PC and PS4/PC, and the fantastic Ego difficulty system which will play a role in balancing competition.

With just two weeks until MLB The Show 18 arrives the final details on what to expect from the game are being revealed. Whether it regards the improvements and additions, or in one case a prominent subtraction, pre-release anticipation for the game has now reached its peak.
The removal of Online Franchise has sparked backlash from fans of the mode, who despite being relatively low in numbers are understandably frustrated given the lack of support it has received over the last four years and because it will probably never return. Meanwhile the stalwart Road to the Show is moving towards a performance-based progression system that has removed the distribution of attribute points in favor of archetypes and attribute caps.

While Road to the Show in MLB The Show has become stagnant over the years the career mode has remained compelling for many because it has always executed the basics well and the structure has simply been a natural fit for baseball. Last year a documentary style presentation was added to bring in some story elements but it wasn’t the dramatic change that some other sports games have made turning their career modes into story modes.
For MLB The Show 18 there again won’t be a shift to a story mode but Road to the Show is changing up some of its fundamentals. Performance-based progression means the removal of the ability to distribute skills where desired and attribute caps will limit the ratings of players based on their archetype models. The mode is becoming more restrictive by taking many of the decisions out of the player’s hands. That may reduce some of the tedious nature along the way and prove more realistic but could disrupt the satisfaction players get of building their player up they way they envision to be best. Read more
This week the promotion for MLB The Show 18 is centered on Road to the Show, and while the blog that was to detail the improvements for this year is overdue to arrive (was scheduled to be out yesterday) there is a video that has been released going over the basics. There isn’t too much new to glean from the trailer with the exception of what would appear to be progression taking on a more results-oriented approach. Previously mentioned changes for RTTS that will be gone into more later this week in a developer stream is the player progression overhaul, the removal of training points, and new “short term focus decisions.”
Every four years the traditional FIFA World Cup game from EA Sports is eagerly anticipated by fans across the globe. The game that represents the tournament has proven to not just be successful in terms of sales (in the millions of copies) but also by acting as an especially accessible product and a bridge for what has generally been a more casual crowd to the traditional FIFA series. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa was one of the best sports games of the last console generation and coincided with explosive growth for FIFA that would help it become the most popular video game series in the world.
That makes it especially curious that it’s March and EA has barely made mention of World Cup. The last two World Cup games have been announced on February 6 and January 26 respectively, providing the publisher ample time to execute marketing campaigns in the many different regions of the world involved. Read more
