EA Sports today announced that SmartGlass will be utilized with the Xbox One version of Madden NFL 25. SmartGlass is available on smartphones and tablets (iOS, Android, Windows) as well as PCs running Windows 8. The app turns them into second screen devices that communicate directly with the games. Read more
Five weeks of the NFL season are now in the books and only three teams remain undefeated. Injuries to Julio Jones, Luke Joeckel, and Brian Hoyer have ended their seasons while E.J. Manual, Clay Matthews, Owen Daniels, and Michael Vick will miss at least a few weeks. The Vikings signed Josh Freeman (not the starter yet) and the Giants traded for Jon Beason.
Players likely to go up after strong performances include Terrelle Pryor, Geno Smith, Tony Romo, Andrew Luck, Knowshon Moreno, Alshon Jeffery, Justin Blackmon, Travis Benjamin, T.Y. Hilton, D.J. Fluker, Bruce Irvin, Brandon Spikes, Calais Campbell, Randy Starks, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Sheldon Richardson. Names that will probably be headed down include Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Chris Johnson, Rob Housler, Logan Mankins, Paul McQuistan, Bryant McKinnie, and Jason Babin.
As always leave your thoughts in the comments as to which players should see an increase or decrease in ratings with the next Madden NFL 25 roster update!
With the current generation essentially now having come to a close for sports titles – there will still be releases on the 360 and PS3 for years but they’ll no longer be of primary development focus – it allows for an opportunity to look back on it as a whole before next-gen gets here in November. The genre has gone from offering wide variety to being very limited in scope during those eight years with only a handful of sports games still alive.
Over the coming weeks I’ll be kicking off a tournament-style voting competition to determine the best sports game of the generation. Feel free to note some of your favorites in the comments. That includes both sim and arcade style games from the 360, PS3, and Wii. It’ll be taken into consideration when forming the entire field for the voting process.
As has been the case with other recent sports titles a deal has emerged just days after release of NBA 2K14. Amazon is offering the Xbox 360 version right now for $49. The quantity at this price is likely limited so take advantage ASAP if interested.
This would be of interest especially to those who plan on buying an Xbox One in November. Amazon is offering the trade-in deal of $50 on NBA 2K14 (also Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14) that could be put towards the Xbox One version. In this scenario it essentially makes the next six weeks with the current-gen version a free rental.
[Update] After being available for $49 most of the day the price has now bounced back to $57. Its worth monitoring over the coming days.
Another patch for FIFA 14 is expected to arrive this week for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 and is already available on the PC.
Unlike the first, which was limited to fixing a few issues identified prior to the game releasing, this update takes into consideration consumer feedback since then. That includes balancing some aspects of gameplay and addressing certain instances of freezing. Read more

In the latest Press Row Hangout I’m joined by usual host Rich Grisham and guest Chris Jacobs from The Gaming Tailgate. Discussion centers on the end of EA Sports’ NCAA Football series before turning to Rich’s impressions of next-gen Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14 after having played both at a press event on Friday.
The one advantage that EA Sports held over the competition in regards to NBA Live 14 was an ability to promote the game and their best interests early. The company did not have a current-gen offering to be concerned with overshadowing and they would only benefit by pushing more consumers to wait for next-gen. That they let this window pass without doing much of anything is another bad sign that will only increase skepticism until they prove they have a product on their hands that is worthy of consideration by consumers. Read more
