Earlier today SCEA announced release dates for MLB 14: The Show placing the PS3 and Vita on April 1st and the PlayStation 4 sometime in May. In addition to the PS4 screenshots and PS3 trailer that accompanied that news, the company has also now released the slate of high-level features for the game.
Though the PS4 will have obvious advantages due to its advanced hardware, the slate of modes and new additions will be nearly the exact same for the two home consoles. That includes Online Franchise, save migration from year-to-year, and the “Quick Counts” option to speed up games. More details are expected next week in the way of an expanded features list but the most impactful changes to anticipate have been laid out in the meantime. Read more
The uncertainty surrounding the release date for MLB 14: The Show has finally come to an end. The game will release on 4/1 for PS3 and Vita with an unspecified date in May for the PS4 version. The news comes less than three weeks before the day that baseball games would typically release under the contract with the league however the lack of competition and introduction of the PS4 moved things off schedule.
With the release of information and media slipping behind by about a month it had become evident that the release date for the was being shifted on every platform. Several weeks ago the PS3 version cleared ESRB certification while the PS4 had not even been submitted which was another indication that separate release dates were likely. There was also the precedence of releasing MLB 07 in mid-May in the PS3’s first full year out. So not only is history being repeated there but the other versions will come out closer to the start of the regular season as well.
The MLB season opens with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks playing in Australia on March 22nd and 23rd. Opening Night is Sunday March 30th. SCEA also today released new screenshots for the PS4 and a new trailer featuring PS3 footage.
A huge patch three months in the making arrived for NBA Live 14 earlier this week. While it had almost no chance of turning a sub-par game into a good one the message being sent with it was made clear – EA Sports is not giving up on the series.
Praise however should be tempered as the work done to produce the update has not been an act of charity but rather necessity. Live 14 has improved in a number of areas now, some fairly significantly, but in general still falls short of reasonable consumer standards.
The latest Press Row Hangout features discussion on NBA Live 14 following the patch and what it means for the future of the series.
A tweet today from the the EA Sports NBA Jam account suggests that a new game is in development and could release later this year. The account had been dormant for almost two years until it awoke on Sunday. Remember that last year EA was play-testing what was said to be a new concept for an NBA game so this could be it. To the surprise of absolutely no one, the World Champion Seattle Seahawks benefit greatly from the last roster update for Madden NFL 25 and finish the season rated 92 as a team. The Broncos on the other hand take significant hits and their final rating is 90.
The update was released yesterday on Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and 360. Players for all teams have been removed from the IR and depth charts adjusted. Check out all the details of the final roster update for the season in spreadsheet form here.
Notable risers in the update include Kam Chancellor (+1 to 95), Earl Thomas (+1 to 95), Russell Wilson (+2 to 94), Russell Okung (+2 to 91), Chris Clemons (+2 to 87), Byron Maxwell (+2 to 84), and Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith (+3 to 81). 2014 FIFA World Cup was made official last week but the majority of the discussion has not been centered on the trailer, screenshots, or features. Instead everyone is talking about the decision to only release the popular every-four-years game on the 360 and PS3 while bypassing the Xbox One and PS4.
World Cup was first mentioned back during an EA Sports October financial call where it was grouped in with other titles that would be releasing on the next-gen consoles. At some point since then the next-gen versions were cut with the reasoning that the install base on last-gen is much greater. There is market saturation and reach into nations that may not have even gotten the new consoles yet to consider.
While that may be true, World Cup has acted as a bridge to the yearly FIFA games, and credited for helping make the brand the worldwide monster it is today. With scarce competition on the new systems and many looking forward to the game that was thought to be coming to them that makes for a missed opportunity to bring in even more new fans.
The update promised shortly after release of NBA Live 14 that would improve gameplay, graphics, and even add practice ability went live today on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In addition the patch includes this year’s NBA All-Star jerseys and court.
Look for a Press Row Hangout discussing post-patch NBA Live 14 on Tuesday night – afterwards the show will be archived and posted to the site Wednesday. As always feel free to leave any observations of the game in its new state in the comments! Read more
