While SCEA has generally not released player ratings as a form of promoting The Show consumers who have gotten their hands on the game early have gone about exposing the ratings instead. That’s happened again this year as a member of Operation Sports has provided screenshots of the top rated players at each position for MLB 14: The Show.
Last year MLB 13 featured 17 players rated 99 overall – which was actually down from an absurd 44 with MLB 12 – and 99 total players coming in 90 or higher. The Los Angeles Angels, who ended up going 78-84, had 3 of the 99s and 6 guys over 90.
It appears the ratings system has been dramatically toned down even further for MLB 14. There are only 3 players rated 99 and 29 coming in 90 or higher. Continue on to check out all the players rated 90+ and take a look at those screens linked to above for the rest. Read more

With just over a week to go until release on the PS3 and Vita very little has been seen of MLB 14: The Show in action. Some gameplay videos were taken off-screen of an early build in January, and trailers have featured snippets of gameplay, but that represents the extent to which MLB 14 has been put on display.
A demo arriving on Tuesday would appear to be unlikely – confirmation of whether there will be one or not is expected tomorrow. Three out of the past four years SCEA has chosen not to provide a pre-release demo. Consumers are mostly going off trust at this point which has been strongly built through the course of the generation. A demo however could have helped those who have both a PS3 and PS4 to realize a baseball itch that they maybe wouldn’t want to wait five weeks to scratch.
With the lack of footage to date the launch trailer carries with it slightly more significance than it would otherwise. That arrived today and shows off highlight plays while flashing through some of the new features such as Quick Counts and save migration.
While those eagerly anticipating the PlayStation 4 version of MLB 14: The Show had to be happy that the game would be out the first Tuesday of May – the earliest possible date once SCEA announced it would land that month – the short five week gap from the PlayStation 3 version releasing has only amplified the perceived necessity of a “trade-up” program.
If the company hopes to get consumers who have held on to their PS3 to buy the game before also getting it on their PS4 they’ll need to offer the incentive. The poll results last month showed there is very limited interest in the PS3 version particularly for those with a PS4. That segment could easily be boosted by letting those people essentially rent the PS3 game for $10 for those first five weeks before being able to take their saves to the PS4. Considering The Show is essentially the same on the two consoles besides technical improvements that would be a beneficial offering for both sides. Read more

Given the development time that has gone in to attempting solutions to the issue that is the length of time it takes to play a single baseball game – and marketing which is focusing on it as a major selling point – a segment from the latest Press Row Hangout tackled the topic. The poll posted last week established that consumers do see it as a serious issue that hampers the experience and limits the sport’s reach in video games so it’s something that is going to continue to be experimented with. Whether the options being presented in MLB 14: The Show are the answer to what ails baseball titles remains far less certain.
