  • Smart Design Decisions Overshadowed by Reliability Concerns in Early MLB 14: The Show Online Franchise Mode Testing

While SCEA revealed some of the framework to Online Franchise for MLB 14: The Show the company never explained the actual logistics of the mode. Baseball inherently presents challenges like the length of the season and time requirement to play games which necessitates chunks of them being open on the schedule for example – but then how are rotations, injuries, and fatigue handled when not playing games in any specific order?

Server issues, the need to actually play some of the games to determine if they’re functioning and reporting back properly, and allocation of time elsewhere within The Show have prevented deep progress in any online franchises from being made to this point but it was important to explain some of the basic details discovered and whether the mode appears to be promising or not. A follow-up article on how Online Franchise holds up through a season and the off-season activities will be written at a later date.  Read more

  • Your Thoughts on the Demo for 2014 FIFA World Cup

The demo for 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil released yesterday on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and the response to it seems largely positive. That’s great for those who have been anticipating the game but feels especially unfortunate for the others who would have jumped at the opportunity to buy it on the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 if presented the opportunity.

The 2010 World Cup game was one of the best sports titles of the entire 360/PS3 generation. 2014 looks to capitalize on that history with consumers along with the extraordinary growth in the FIFA series since then. However much of the discussion around the game has been the decision not to release it on the new systems and that seemed to deflate the hype significantly. The game will be out on April 15 which is almost two months before the actual World Cup begins so the excitement that has felt lacking as of late may still build over that time.

For those who have played the 2014 FIFA World Cup demo what are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments and vote in the poll below!

In the final clip from the most recent Press Row Hangout the panel discusses the news from EA Sports that the upcoming UFC game won’t have a “Fighter Share” feature. Past titles from the company including EA MMA and Fight Night have included the ability to create fighters and then share them online for others to download but potential litigation is now scaring companies away from support for that type of freedom.

SCEA made two time-saving features the most marketed additions for MLB 14: The Show. There is no doubt that the length of time it takes to play games has limited baseball’s potential video game consumer base and even hampered the ability for the most dedicated fans to play to the extent they would like. Of the two options developed for MLB 14 at least one is proving to be a worthwhile option to consider.  Read more

  • First Roster Update for MLB 14: The Show Won’t Be Out Until April 8

    mlb14theshowbravesrotation

MLB 14: The Show released on PS3 and Vita today but the wait will continue one week until new rosters are provided. For the time being the rosters included in the game do not represent any transactions that took place after mid-February. Unfortunately that means consumers may feel the need to wait until April 8 before starting up Franchise, Road to the Show, or Season mode.

The first roster update will include signings, player movement, and injuries that have occurred since mid-February along with accurate lineups and rotations to the start of the season. It should also include players who make their debut in the league prior to then. Remember no player can be included in a video game until they have officially appeared in an MLB game which makes them part of the MLBPA.

To coincide with the release of MLB 14: The Show on PS3 and Vita tomorrow SCEA has pushed out a new video that goes over 30 features that might not be known about the game. Many of them will be familiar to those who have followed information on this year’s edition but there are others which haven’t received the same level of attention mixed in. Keep in mind that all of these features – even though most of the footage used is PS3 – will apply to the PS4 version which is now five weeks away from its release.
