EA Sports took an unnecessary risk in having Jon Jones represent their UFC mobile game, which released just over two weeks ago, and they were placed in a tough spot immediately because of it. The game was out only a matter of days before he was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run, had his light heavyweight title stripped, and now even his manager is saying he may never fight in the UFC again.
EA changed their Facebook and Twitter pages to generic images immediately after the news broke but it took longer for him to be removed as the face of the game. In an update that went out today on Android and iOS, Jones was removed from the the app icon, store page, and loading screen. He remains featured in one of the screenshots on the store page.
Jones has not been removed from the game completely though. He remains on the roster and like all fighters must be bought with real money in order to use.
One of the best things to come out of EA Sports UFC have been the glitch videos commentated on by the fake Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg. EA UFC was a fairly polished game but the rare occasions where it did glitch created some hilarious moments and they’re capitalized on brilliantly in the videos. The first was posted last July and that was also followed up with another a month later. After a long layoff now a third entry in the series is here.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour acts as the return of EA Sports’ golf franchise after taking over a year off but it will enter the market with a well-regarded golf game already available. The Golf Club will be its competition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be much of a competition.
The Golf Club has some advantages over McIlroy but also targets a smaller audience. It attempts to be a true simulation which means it’s ultra-realistic and difficult. McIlroy on the other hand is offering different gameplay styles and “fantasy courses” to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Those who have already bought TGC and are still enjoying it may be less inclined to buy another golf game this summer.
While The Golf Club is cheaper it has also been available since August so it’s no longer fresh on the minds of golf aficionados. Though the recent retail release and upcoming feature patch helps in that regard it has little to no marketing budget to compete with an EA Sports-run campaign. The licensing aspect (McIlroy having real courses, golfers, and equipment) is of course a big factor for many as well.
Will the existence of The Golf Club alter your approach in considering a purchase of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour? Vote in the poll and leave any thoughts in the comments! Results of the poll will be examined next week.
Electronic Arts released fourth quarter 2015 earnings yesterday – a strong quarter that has pushed the company’s stock near its all-time high set in 2005 – and the primary theme was digital revenue from extra content and live services driving the success. Read more
Hinted to be coming for quite some time Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 was made official today. The Tony Hawk series was extremely popular and well-regarded over a stretch of time with the ‘Pro Skater’ and ‘Underground’ titles but since 2004 it has been completely mishandled. The idea to release a game tied to an expensive skateboard peripheral in 2009, riding off the music-game craze at the time, was a special kind of disaster.
Now though the series is said to be “going back to its roots”. Game Informer has the exclusive first look at the game which is expected out later this year on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and 360. Early concern from fans include being developed by Robomodo – which as a studio has a very poor track record – to the inclusion of projectiles and power-ups. Visually the first screenshots don’t look to be anywhere near current-gen quality and the decision to develop cross-gen and support the old systems is being blamed for that.
