It’s rare to have any game information leak prior to the planned marketing schedule for the annual sports games. That’s especially true of 2K Sports who has always been very protective of their traditional cycle. NBA 2K16 releases in two months, and the company hasn’t even put out a single screenshot or shown any gameplay footage yet, while revealing very little about the feature set and hinting any news would still be several weeks away.
That makes what’s going on with NBA 2K16 outside of their control completely unprecedented. Leaks have revealed details like the cover athletes, Spike Lee’s involvement, some colleges being included, plus MyLeague Online, team relocation, new online modes and others – all before 2K planned to announce them.
More keeps on finding a way out, and that’s true again today thanks to Microsoft’s SmartGlass app, which has since had the info erased. More details on features related to MyGM, MyCareer, MyLeague, and My Team have been uncovered, further confirmation of the leaked earlier features is made, and there’s a first description of the new “2K Pro Am” which may be a replacement for last year’s “Jordan Rec Center”. Read more
The highly publicized back-and-forth between Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen over the last week, concerning which team of all-time greats would win between the Lakers and Bulls, can’t go much further than trash talk (their preferred method) and well-reasoned lineup analysis and speculation. However with NBA 2K15 we can see an actual game play out with rosters containing all the legends, both current and past, that make up the storied franchises.
With that in mind I ran a simulation for Sporting News between the two teams and summarized the game, laid out stats, and created the highlight video below. Who would you put your money on in a game between All-Time Lakers and Bulls teams?
Next in line with the ratings reveals for Madden NFL 16 are the quarterbacks. Unlike the running backs yesterday, it’s not the same top five that ended Madden NFL 15, and even the order of how they stack up has changed. Read more
The extremely popular EA Sports Hockey League was one of the many features that didn’t make the transition from NHL 14 to NHL 15 on the new systems. Those who own NHL 15 however will be able to get an early preview of the mode that will be returning in NHL 16. Read more
After revealing the top rated rookies yesterday, EA Sports has turned attention to the returning players of the league in what appears to be the start of 22 straight (week) days in which ratings will be rolled out for Madden NFL 16. Today the focus is on the top rated running backs.
Leading the way is Marshawn Lynch with an Overall Rating of 96. Lynch finished Madden NFL 15 as the highest rated back so it should be no surprise that he leads the way to start the new season. In fact, the top five from the position are the same players falling in essentially the same order to how Madden NFL 15 finished out with its last roster update. Read more
Last week it was discovered, through a leaked achievements list, that MyCareer Mode in NBA 2K16 will include some form of college implementation in the early stages of the player’s career path. That news, combined with there being at least 11 schools that have been licensed by 2K Sports through the Collegiate Licensing Company for use in video games, makes it appear likely that some actual universities are going to appear in NBA 2K16.
It would be the first time in years that any representation of college would be featured in a video game. In 2013 the NCAA Football franchise was cancelled and the last college basketball game was from EA Sports in 2009. Poor sales of the basketball games ended their run, while lawsuits around likenesses were to blame for football being shut down.
In a video produced for Hit The Pass, I’m joined by Rich Grisham and Owen Good to discuss the the way colleges could enhance the NBA 2K product, the justification for the company adding them, and what it could mean for the landscape of college video games as a whole.
Even when selected #1, quarterbacks aren’t always the top rated players of their class when entering Madden. The learning curve, and potential that they may sit to begin their career, means positions like offensive tackle and wide receiver get an edge in early ratings.
That proves true again this year as it’s the #4 pick in the draft, Amari Cooper, who comes out on top for Madden NFL 16, though #1 pick Jameis Winston is right behind by only a single point. The #2 pick, Marcus Mariota, finds himself four points lower than Cooper. The sixth highest rated rookie, Dante Fowler, sadly won’t even play this season after suffering an injury on the first day of rookie minicamp. What do you think of these first ratings for Madden NFL 16?
82 Overall – Amari Cooper, WR, Raiders
81 Overall – Jameis Winston, QB, Buccaneers
80 Overall – Leonard Williams, DE, Jets
80 Overall – Todd Gurley, RB, Rams
80 Overall – Brandon Scherff – OT, Redskins
79 Overall – Dante Fowler, DE, Jaguars
78 Overall – Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers
78 Overall – Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans
78 Overall – Kevin White, WR, Bears
77 Overall – Vic Beasley, DE, Falcons
Despite the promise of a huge roster update over the All-Star break period for MLB 15: The Show that would involve a sweeping reevaluation of the entirety of the league, that update has yet to be delivered by SCEA. A third week has now gone by with updates that have disappointed tremendously as they haven’t even been up to par with those from earlier in the season while fans have eagerly awaited something that would greatly impact Diamond Dynasty.
There’s ratings movement for a few big name players this week however which is what separates it from the previous two which only had position changes and no ratings changes. Chris Sale (+2 to 95), Bryce Harper (+1 to 95), Zack Greinke (+2 to 94), and J.D. Martinez (+4 to 85) are the winners. Joey Votto (-2 to 89), Nelson Cruz (-2 to 88), Michael Brantley (-2 to 87), and Justin Upton (-4 to 86) find themselves on the wrong end of the adjustments. Read more
