One of the most anticipated days of the year for sports gamers has arrived with the release of NBA 2K16. Even the servers are working! Considering how much content the game packs in, it’s going to take several days to go through it all and prepare a review.

In the meantime here are some gameplay videos captured from the early hours with 2K16. There are segments of gameplay from college in MyCareer, Online Play Now, and MyPark – more to be added taking a look at different modes later today. Read more

  • NBA 2K16 servers holding up on release day

In what may be a first for 2K Sports and the NBA 2K series the servers are holding up on a release day! NBA 2K16 came out at midnight and not only have the servers been completely stable and online, but the games being played have been practically flawless.

The servers in recent years have been especially critical for NBA 2K because so much of the game is tied into the online connection requirement. If the servers are down, modes in progress such as MyCareer and MyGM can not be played – so it’s not just about online head-to-head or team-up or MyTeam. With past editions there’s been a good week or two post-release where the game was rendered largely unplayable.

While I’ve only played three Play Now Online games they’ve all been great, and reports from many others are of similar experiences. Feedback is good on MyPark as well. Things might be a little more wonky in Pro-Am where one game I played had another team walk on the court in the middle of it, our players all go invisible, and then the game crash to the dashboard.

The biggest concern for online H2H relates to pauses. While there is a three minute clock on being paused, there is apparently no limit to number of pauses. Against the wrong opponent the experience could be made awful because of that.

So far so good though otherwise. All the features in the game can be reached and successfully played. Yes, that’s a low bar to clear, but we’ll take it!

The demo for NBA Live 16 has essentially showcased all the major improvements to the game for this year with the online Pro-Am modes and of course basic gameplay. That makes the EA Access trial period less of an event, but there’s a lot that has opened up through it as well. I’m working towards a review for Sporting News that will go up Monday. Until then, check out some of the early gameplay videos that have been captured from the full game!  Read more

  • 10 hour trial for NBA Live 16 now available through EA Access on Xbox One

NBA Live 16 is out now to download as a timed trial with EA Access on Xbox One. Subscribers to the service will get 10 hours of playtime after which it will expire. The timer is ticking down whenever the game is loaded regardless of whether it is being played, menus are being navigated through, or if there is any activity taking place at all. So make sure to exit out and close the application from the Xbox One home screen when not in use.

The 10 hours are there to play whether or not its all used by Tuesday. Saves are stored on the hard drive so progress in any of the modes and online records carry over if a full copy is bought. The complete game is available during the trial period.

For those without EA Access there is still the demo available on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. That demo features not only exhibition games but the ability to play online in the two new modes within Live Pro-Am.

EA Access was announced last July and is exclusive to the Xbox One. This is the case because Sony has declined to offer the service through PlayStation 4 saying it doesn’t offer enough value, despite being arguably the best value in all of gaming. EA Access includes the “Vault” which offers unlimited play with nearly every game from the company’s catalog this generation, 10% off all digital purchases, and the ability to play games up to five days before they release with a limited timed trial. EA Access is $30 for a full year or $5 month-to-month.

  • New features coming to online play now games with NBA 2K16

With only two days to go until release 2K Sports is still in the process of revealing features for NBA 2K16. Today it’s a look at changes made to standard online ranked games.

Play Now Online in 2K16 features a “league” system that is similar in nature to Online Seasons in various EA Sports games. Winning games will prompt movement up to higher leagues while losing will mean relegation to a lower one. There are some differences though as coming out on top with lower rated (by tier) teams results in a win bonus and at higher leagues classic teams are unlocked.
