Last year Diamond Dynasty really came into its own as arguably the best of the team-building modes within the sports gaming genre. What it lacked was variety – both in team construction and methods of play – and those issues have been tackled well with MLB The Show 16.

The most popular way to play right now based on the results of multiple polls is against the CPU. That comes as somewhat of a surprise considering the always-connected mode was built on head-to-head online competition. However Conquest has proved especially compelling, offering up three inning games that prove to be satisfying and tons of unlocks that are beneficial to reaching goals both inside and out of Diamond Dynasty. The first patch for MLB The Show 16 has been pushed live on PlayStation 4. The update includes some bug fixes that have been rushed out to better improve the experience, as it’ll take some more time before a patch in response to community feedback can make it out.

♦Online gameplay softlock addressed: the game will no longer get into a pickoff state when a pitch is in flight or when a ball is in play.

♦Extensive work has been done to address the “Challenge failed” issue on PS4.

♦Fixed an issue where the game would soft lock (freeze) while a user on offense calls a timeout, as a user on defense attempts to pick off a runner on 1st.

♦Fixed an issue where the game would soft lock (freeze) when attempting to access Pitcher Attributes during an at bat with the score bar display option turned off.

♦Accounts in PS EU territories should now be able to purchase Stubs within game.

Additionally, in an attempt to make good on how the game has slowed to a crawl in primetime hours due to servers being overloaded, everyone has received 5,000 Stubs and a 10 Pack Bundle. That’s about $15 worth of value based on the in-game currency system. The bonus Stubs and packs are expected to be in all accounts by Tuesday.

  • MLB The Show 16 suffering from crippling server drag in primetime hours

    mlbtheshow16loading

Yesterday Sony San Diego released a server-side update that fixed some online related issues with MLB The Show 16. What it did not do, however, was address the biggest problem the game is facing right now as it buckles under the server load being faced in primetime hours running from about 3PT-10PT every day.

Yesterday offered up the worst experience yet. MLB The Show 16 was essentially rendered completely unplayable unless disconnecting entirely from the internet before starting it up. While connected, it took upwards of five minutes simply to load to the main menu, and navigating to any other page took several minutes of their own. It probably would have taken over an hour to complete a single “Attack” cycle in Conquest – not that anyone would even attempt such a thing given the circumstances, as there was no point to even trying to play in any form or fashion during that whole time period. For part of the evening the game’s servers were even down completely, returning a “Server Error Encountered” message.

This trouble can no longer be explained away as simply being a challenge faced the day of release or even the week of release due to high demand – a popular excuse most publishers tend to lean on these days. The game is into its second week now with no sign of improvement. There hasn’t been an issue comparable to this one since NBA 2K14 was down and unplayable for a full week over the holidays in 2013.

MLB The Show 16 is a fantastic game with a number of compelling ways to play. However if consumers can’t rely on it to be available to them at all times, and work as intended, it could have longer term ramifications for the series.

MLB The Show 16 Conquest Mode

An update that went out server-side overnight in MLB The Show 16 has addressed the inability to complete Conquest mode. Up until now players could take over the entire board but would not receive acknowledgement of successfully finishing the campaign.

A few other changes were made with the update and initially that included no longer being able to feed unsellable cards to Diamond Dynasty players. It appears backlash to that news caused a reversal to the decision and they remain feed-able. Inside Edge has been affected as far more players are now seeing their ratings altered. Today that’s over 500 of them, while previous days have only featured around 100.

Unfortunately other issues, in particular the server drag that slows everything in the menus down to a crawl during primetime hours and “Challenge Failed” errors, continue despite being over a week out from release now.

Springtime is now not only about the release of the first wave in sports games every year but also the prime period to be a subscriber to the EA Access service on Xbox One. The back library of titles in the EA Access Vault is always building but this is the point in which still relevant sports titles are finding themselves added to the service.

The next to come is FIFA 16 which will make it into the Vault on April 19, and it’ll be included for EA Access subscribers on both Xbox One and the recently launched Origin Access on PC. Madden NFL 16 was added to the Vault in early February. NHL 16 went in just one week ago. Still to come, likely in May and June, are NBA Live 16 and Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

EA Access is $30 for a year or $5 month-to-month and in addition to the Vault subscribers receive 10 free hours with each new game and 10% off all digital transactions.
