2K Sports Unveils Features of The Bigs
With The BIGS, we want to take the baseball genre to new heights and redefine what a baseball video game can be,†said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio. “The BIGS has the fast learning curve of an arcade game coupled with deep play mechanics, amazing visuals, and hero-like presentation of real MLB® players that will keep gamers coming back for more. The BIGS will showcase dramatic highlight reel moments at every at-bat, creating a truly epic baseball title.â€
Downloadable content was a topic of discussion for NBA Street: Homecourt even before it was released. Some was planned to be available soon after release of the game, while more additions were planned for farther on down the line. Later it was revealed the downloadable content would be exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game.
However now after two months the only things that have made their way to the Xbox Live Marketplace are gamerpics and themes. The official website for the game still displays the message “New Xbox 360 Downloadable Content Coming Soon”.
I was able to get in touch with EA Sports to find out the status of the content. There was an external delay that pushed the releases back. While there is no date that is being targeted, the content is still going to make its way out at some point.
Considering the amount of detail that went into the courts in the game, I’m looking forward to trying the new ones out. Still it’s disappointing to have such a long wait for the extra content. Last time that happened EA ended up giving out the NCAA Football 07 and Madden 07 alternate jerseys for free. I wouldn’t expect that to be the case this time however.
SCEA has released five new videos from the upcoming Playstation 3 version of MLB 07: The Show. The release of the game is scheduled for May 15th. (edit: These videos have been removed since the game has been released)
Edit 4/27: Gilbert Arenas revealed as the NBA Live 08 cover athlete. Click here to read the article.
With the NCAA Football 08 and Madden NFL 08 cover announcements now out of the way, the next one on the horizon is finding out who will capture the honor of the NBA Live 08 cover.
The first step to narrowing down the candidates is eliminate those players who may be considered based on their performace this past season but were previously on the cover of the Live series or currently representing a competing product. For Live Tracy McGrady (07), Dwyane Wade (06), Carmelo Anthony (2005), Vince Carter (2004), Jason Kidd (2003), Kevin Garnett (2001), Tim Duncan (2000). Then there are Shaquille O’Neal (2K6, 2K7), Ben Wallace (2K5), Allen Iverson (2K-2K4), Kobe Bryant (SCEA NBA 0x). Also on an individual note, Steve Nash has turned down the cover for both NBA Live and NBA 2K in the past. All those players can be scratched off the list.
The next thing is to look over the statistics to see who had the numbers this season to at least merit consideration. Dirk Nowitzki, Gilbert Arenas, Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Amare Stoudemire had big seasons and played in the majority of games. The NBA Live series has a history of selecting young exciting players. Out of this group who has the best shot at the cover?
For years now many fans of the Madden franchise (as well as other EA Sports titles) have felt that the biggest area the game is lacking in is its presentation. This especially came about after NFL 2K5 had the ESPN presentation that so many enjoyed. When EA Sports bought the ESPN license, many fans assumed that it meant they had the same ideas in mind for Madden. However EA has not utilized the ESPN license in that fashion.
So if the fans are asking for that style of presentation, why hasn’t EA gone that direction? There are viable reasons, whether people want to accept them or not. Whether it will remain the case for the future is unknown, but up until this point it has been seen as either unnecessary or not possible due to the multiple contracts they have secured.
The first major roadblock comes with the legalities of the contracts that EA is held to. EA has obtained both the ESPN license and the NFL license. ESPN would like to be used in a way to promote their brand. The NFL would like the NFL Network to be used in that same way. Those two conflict with each other as they are competing networks. So the NFL would not be happy to have ESPN be used heavily for presentation, just as ESPN would not want to see the NFL Network be used in that same way. It’s a sticky situation which isn’t dealt with as easily as the consumers would assume. If it was as simple as just deciding to use ESPN for the presentation, that would’ve been done already.
Here is another video I put together to celebrate the announcement of Titans QB Vince Young as the Madden NFL 08 cover athlete.
I went ahead and put together a video commemorating the selection of Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young to the cover of Madden NFL 08.
Amidst all the recent cover news for Madden came the offical word on the release date. Madden NFL 08 will make its way into stores on Tuesday August 14th.
NCAA Football 08 has also settled on a date and will be coming out on Tuesday July 17th.
That leaves four weeks seperating the releases. Last year the two games came out five weeks apart. NCAA Football releases on the same week as it did last year, however Madden will be one week earlier.
