Throughout the month there will be a number of articles that take a look back over the biggest developments in sports gaming this year along with the annual top 10 games countdown. Overall 2010 finished with only a couple great standout games but a wide variety of decent games that provided value or innovation in their own ways. I have narrowed each category for a "Community Choice Awards" down to three games based on how they delivered and the perception in the community since their releas...

The Line Drive is a weekly collection of news, links, and updates that didn’t necessarily warrant their own postings. It appears the MLB games will be releasing on Tuesday March 8th with MLB 2K11 being the first to announce the date. Typically the MLB games release on the first Tuesday in March so it is interesting that they have shifted back a week. EA thinks skateboarding has "run its course" as a top video game. I'd say the yearly release schedules have killed it more tha...

NBA Jam for the PS3 and 360 was at one time a highly anticipated game. The remake, with the license having been acquired by EA Sports, would originally be announced as a Wii exclusive. Everyone though fully expected it would make its way to the HD consoles. Soon it was announced as being a "free" pack-in with NBA Elite 11. Even at that time there were many people who planned on buying Elite in order to obtain NBA Jam. Over the following months the desire for the game dissipated at an alarmi...
  • Arcade Games Struggling to Survive at Retail

The recent release of NBA Jam, and the rumor of EA Sports possibly reviving NFL Blitz, prompted some thinking on my part as to the future of arcade style games. One has to wonder if they simply are no longer viable as full retail releases. Sluggish sales of NBA Jam are the latest example of the struggles to succeed in the marketplace. (more…)...

The Line Drive is a weekly collection of news, links, and updates that didn’t necessarily warrant their own postings. Fight Night Champion cover art has been revealed. Either it is being used to focus on the story mode or the fighter has yet to be announced that will take its place. The community wish list tournament for NCAA Football 12 at The Gaming Tailgate is down to the final four. Coaching carousel, improved defensive playbooks, custom playbooks, and better CPU play c...
  • Padrecast: Holiday Solo Edition

    Posted November 27th, 2010 at 3:30 pm 9 Comments »
For the holiday weekend I thought I'd run through a Padrecast on my own and take some questions from Twitter and Facebook. I discuss the NBA 2K11 patch and ratings drop for Tony Parker and IGN's decision to run a piece praising EA for canceling NBA Elite 11 at the last minute. Then responding to a couple of the questions presented I go into the likelihood of college basketball and MVP Baseball returning, how the "Online Pass" may be affecting sales, and more. The podcast runs approximately 28 ...

The Line Drive is a weekly collection of news, links, and updates that didn’t necessarily warrant their own postings. EA Sports is bringing a new golf game to Facebook that will include some real-time gameplay. EA Sports PGA Tour Golf Challenge is also notable for lacking the name Tiger Woods. ESPN has a look at Fight Night Champion which includes how the story begins in prison and the decision to make it an M rated game. A second survey for the UFC Undisputed series...
  • IGN Calls NBA Elite Cancellation Courageous

Typically I don't bother with articles written about developments in the sports gaming world from the mainstream media sites, however this instance just couldn't be ignored in its audacity. It appears IGN is trying to assist EA Sports in the image rebuilding process of their NBA franchise. It reads like a PR piece prompted by EA and ends up doing readers a disservice. (more…)...
