NHL 12 Shows Off Trifecta of Improvements
Though Thursday's 'Summer Showcase' from EA was a letdown given the lack of any announcements, the event did provide the opportunity to showcase NHL 12 and what is said to be its "hat trick of innovations". NHL 12 Cover Athlete is Now a Free Agent
By most accounts Steven Stamkos was an excellent choice as the cover athlete for EA Sports' NHL 12. The one thing many initially overlooked however was his looming status as a free agent. The Tampa Bay Lightning had until today to exclusively negotiate a contract with Stamkos and prevent him from hitting the market. An agreement was not completed and Stamkos is now a restricted free agent. A scenario where Stamkos ends up on another team still seems unlikely but it's possible nonetheless....

NHL 12 Cover Athlete is Steven Stamkos
EA Sports has just revealed that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos has received the honor of being cover athlete for NHL 12. Stamkos was the number one pick in the 2008 draft, an All-Star, and led the league in goals in 2010 while coming in second this last season. The cover athlete is typically locked down a month or two before the season comes to an end and that means performance in the playoffs comes too late to influence the decision. NHL 12 Winter Classic Video
One of the big additions to NHL 12 now that the rival 2K series - which had carried the exclusive license - has been completely killed off is the 'Winter Classic'. Unfortunately limited to last year's venue Heinz Field and not the upcoming one to be held at Citizens Bank Park the outdoor setting will still be plenty of fun to play in if this new trailer is any indication. No Return of NHL 2K This Year
Today during their quarterly financial webcast Take Two announced that the NHL 2K series will not be returning this year. NHL 2K11 only appeared on the Wii and iPhone, and though not explicit in the statement it would appear that there are no plans for any non-mobile version of 2K12 - that is unless the company does not consider the Wii a "console". NHL 12 Feature Reveal Trailer
EA Sports has released the first trailer for NHL 12 going over new features. As discovered last week the series will debut the 'Winter Classic' though the venue will be last year's (Heinz Field) rather than rumored 2012 location Citizens Bank Park. There is a new 'full contact engine', goalie contact, jostling in front of the net, and more gameplay specific improvements. First NHL 12 Screenshot Features Winter Classic and Goalie Interference
EA Sports has released the first screenshot for NHL 12 and it unveils a few big new features. The image (see full size in the gallery) shows the inclusion of the 'Winter Classic' which had been exclusively licensed to 2K Sports preventing it from being introduced in the series. It also displays contact with goalies which has been a frequently requested feature for quite some time....
