Throughout the month there will be a number of articles that take a look back over the biggest developments in sports gaming this year along with the annual top 10 games countdown. Overall 2010 finished with only a couple great standout games but a wide variety of decent games that provided value or innovation in their own ways. I have narrowed each category for a "Community Choice Awards" down to three games based on how they delivered and the perception in the community since their releas...
  • Arcade Games Struggling to Survive at Retail

The recent release of NBA Jam, and the rumor of EA Sports possibly reviving NFL Blitz, prompted some thinking on my part as to the future of arcade style games. One has to wonder if they simply are no longer viable as full retail releases. Sluggish sales of NBA Jam are the latest example of the struggles to succeed in the marketplace. (more…)...

Black Friday has come and gone with a nice slashing of prices to the majority of the EA Sports library and a few scattered deals on other titles as well. Now comes Cyber Monday as online retailers make a second push with deals. Some of these are merely comparable or not even as good as what had been offered prior, with all those EA Sports titles and WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 having been available from Amazon for less than $30 on Saturday. The big one for Cyber Monday is NBA 2K11 going for $...
  • Black Friday 2010 Deals

I've gone ahead and put together listings of Black Friday sales that relate to sports games. Some of the deals don't seem all that great at first glance, but considering that many of the titles in question incorporate the "Online Pass" it can end up being a savings over buying used and tacking on the $10 online functionality charge. Those looking for many specific or a wide variety of sports games will find Best Buy and Walmart the places to go. NCAA Football 11, NHL 11, FIFA 11, and EA Spo...
  • Remaining October Sales Results

Having already detailed the doubling in sales that the NBA 2K series received with 2K11 and the drop-off that Madden 11 is now experiencing that leaves a handful of other titles and their sales to still discuss. It is largely disappointing news even when considering some of the following games didn't have huge expectations to begin with. (more…)...

The nominees for the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards were recently announced. Though the VGAs are not really taken all that seriously by gamers they are the awards that get the most publicity due to the show airing on cable channel Spike along with heavy promotion and upcoming game trailer reveals. This year's takes place on Saturday December 11th at 8ET/5PT and the voting can be done from the official website. In past years the VGAs have really whiffed on sports titles, nominating the usual s...
  • Madden to Launch with Nintendo 3DS

Madden NFL will be one of the launch titles for the new Nintendo 3DS. Madden on the 3DS will borrow some features from the different versions of Madden already available. It takes from the HD versions GameFlow play calling, offers some of what the Wii version provided with "Call Your Shots" and 5-on-5 mode, and uses a slo-mo feature in certain moments similar to the mobile version. The Nintendo 3DS is expected to release in March 2011. Madden NFL Football will offer a comprehensive handheld...
  • Organizational Shakeup at EA Sports

EA Sports is going through a restructuring that has resulted in the elimination of the general manager position at both EA Canada and Tiburon studios. Philip Holt (Tiburon) is remaining with the company but in a different role while Moira Dang (EA Canada) has moved on. It is unknown how much of a role the debacle that was NBA Elite 11 had in the decision to reorganize the company but it certainly seems to have played a part. The firing of Dang would suggest that much of the blame is being l...
