It's been a rough first third of the year for sports gaming. There have been some good games released but even those have suffered from a wide array of issues the severity of which has stretched beyond what has become somewhat accepted as the norm. With well over 5K votes in the poll posted last week it's MLB 2K12 taking the crown as the biggest failure this year with MLB 12: The Show trailing close behind.  (more…)...
  • What Sports Game From The First Third of the Year Failed The Most?

The primary releases from the first four months of 2012 may best be remembered for their major issues than what they got right. There were a few good games in the mix but even those didn't arrive in clean fashion or even fix what ailed them later on. That got me to thinking - which of these games failed you and/or what companies have been the most unethical with their practices? A significant investment is made whether $20 for the UEFA DLC, $60 for the standard retail games, or $80 for th...

Several titles released within the last couple months are seeing deals right now on Amazon. It's likely that these are limited in supply so consider grabbing any of interest soon if the price meets what you're looking for. •Tiger Woods 13 for $40: 360 - PS3 This matches the lowest level so far for the standard version of Tiger Woods 13. •FIFA Street for $40: 360 This matches the lowest level but the PS3 version had spent more time at $40. •SSX for $40: 360 - PS3 ...

Outside of a failure to produce a quality online experience UFC Undisputed 3 delivered a significant advancement over the previous iteration in the series with well-recognized gameplay enhancements and a deep suite of features. The struggles of UFC 2010 forced THQ to reevaluate the viability of the product and ultimately to a decision to move off a yearly release schedule. Despite a nearly two year layoff not only did sales fail to increase but they fell 18% from UFC 2010 which itself was do...
  • Big Sale on Three Recent EA Sports Releases: SSX, FIFA Street, and Grand Slam Tennis 2

In the last month EA Sports relaunched three franchises to mixed results. Those three have now received significant price reductions with SSX and FIFA Street falling to $40 and Grand Slam Tennis 2 down to $30 at Amazon making them much more appealing as potential purchases. SSX (Xbox 360 - PS3) has generally been well received since launching at the end of February. Amazon did originally offer a $10 promo credit with pre-orders so this amounts to an extra $10 shaved off from then. FIFA...

  • Sports Genre Stumbles as Companies Take Fewer Risks and Reap Fewer Rewards

In 2011 EA Sports saw sales of their major franchises (Madden, NCAA, NHL, FIFA, Tiger) rise - what that really amounts to however is a blip rather than an actual expansion of the consumer base. Meanwhile other highly regarded series like NBA 2K and MLB: The Show had their sales drop off after especially strong years. The sports genre of video games simply hasn't grown this generation. As console sales continue to expand the potential number of consumers that hasn't carried over in the pas...
