  • Hangout Video: E3 2015 Day Zero Reactions

The first day of E3 is in the books and it was relatively uneventful, though quite informative, in regards to the upcoming crop of sports games. This year at E3 expectations were tempered as far as the yearly league-licensed games go and there were few deviations from what was anticipated. Madden NFL 16 got a new mode announced, NBA Live 16 made some big promises, and FIFA 16 had one of the longest presentations in recent memory. Meanwhile the oft-rumored, and perpetually teased, Joe M...

The second edition of the mobile game Tap Sports Baseball just released and an Easter egg in the game has revealed a football version is on the way. On the outfield wall in Tap Sports Baseball 2015 is an advertisement for Tap Sports Football. Before turning to TSB the developers behind the game made Your Turn Football in 2013. It was a great game, particularly for a first attempt, with the design principles that made it so good being carried over to the baseball efforts. Areas in wh...

Given that anticipation for a new football game has been especially high in recent months, with Joe Montana Football 16 expected later this year and Mutant Football League coming at some point down the line, it's interesting to evaluate the market for such games. There have been so few unlicensed sports games to emerge over the last decade as companies have avoided the risk with development costs rising and consumers demanding all products meet a quality threshold which necessitates...
  • Your Thoughts on Potential Interest in Unlicensed Football Games

It's been nearly five years since a console football game last released that didn't carry with it NFL and NFLPA licensing. Backbreaker in 2010 followed All Pro Football 2K8 from 2007 and neither received a sequel. The last truly successful unlicensed game was Blitz: The League which came out in 2005. The limited market, greater development costs, and higher consumer expectations have made projects such as those increasingly difficult to justify and stay alive beyond the conceptual process...

After months of speculation revolving around Joe Montana Football 16, and more recently faulty rumors backed by questionable motivations, an image provided by the game's namesake on Twitter has seemingly cleared up one of the major questions about the upcoming product: it won't carry with it any NFL licensing.  (more…)...

Joe Montana Football 16 was announced last July simply to make its existence known along with the intent for it to release this coming summer. No information about the game was provided and since then very little has been disseminated. Originally thought to be just a mobile game the developers - or Montana who seems to be running the show - have left the eventual platforms open to speculation. A post made by a new user, with absolutely no established history, on the Operation Spo...
  • Mutant Football League Still in Development

Work has continued on the return of Mutant Football League despite an unsuccessful crowd-funding campaign in 2013. The game has been so under-the-radar since that when pre-alpha footage (check it out here) was posted two weeks passed until any media site took notice. Creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League Football (released in 1993 on Sega Genesis) Michael Mendheim has been driving the development of the PS4/XB1/PC/iOS/Android reboot. During the Kickstarter campaign...

Social gaming company Zynga today announced a new brand to be known as Zynga Sports 365 with football and golf being the first projects under the umbrella. The NFL and NFLPA licenses have been secured for the football game and Tiger Woods has been partnered with for golf. One of the names behind these games will be immediately recognizable to many Madden fans. Ian Cummings, who was the creative director for Madden NFL 10 through a good portion of '12, is a design director at the new Zynga...
