Football games have been forced to go without officially having Soldier Field as the home of the Chicago Bears. In the case of Madden it has instead been referred to as "Chicago Stadium" while NFL 2K5 called it "Chicago Field". This has all been due to a licensing issue as the stadium is owned by the Chicago Park District. They have remained unresponsive over the years despite being consistently approached for the license to use Soldier Field in games. Though the resemblance to Soldier...

With the upcoming NFL season in question the 20th and final roster update for Madden 11 potentially holds more importance than the typical end-of-year update. The player ratings will not only be the primary baseline for Madden 12 but if no collective bargaining agreement is reached the rosters would remain largely the same minus free agents. This final update concentrated on getting remaining players off the IR, adding players to teams and free agency, and adjusting the ratings to best refl...

No matter where the most blame is placed by gamers when it comes to the NFL exclusive license, whether that be the league or EA Sports or an equal share, the extension of a year to the current contract and the manner it was negotiated could be telling. Based on each side's actions it appears that the NFL is much more in favor of the deal as it currently stands than EA Sports who took a reduction on this season's payments while tacking on another year. With the uncertainty surrounding the labor negotiations that will determine whether there is even an NFL season to come, EA Sports in October requested a reduction of around $30 million in payments related to this year's upcoming title. The lack of an NFL season would have a significant impact on operations and potential sales and that has the company making very conservative fiscal projections as they plan for the worst and hope for the best. According to Sports Business Journal the league...

The roster update is expected take a final wide look at the performance levels for individuals and teams around the league and stabilize the rosters returning any remaining players from the IR. The New York Times recently posted a detailed look at Madden 11 and the usage rates in online play of every NFL team. The data is tracked from the start of the season up to the Super Bowl and shows trends and some points of interest explaining any notable shifts in usage. The Eagles finish the season as the most popular team online which is no surprise considering their explosive offense. Despite down seasons the Vikings finished #2 overall and the Cowboys #4 (though they did lose some supp...
  • Madden 12 SOK Now Limited to One Per Game

Just yesterday I wrote at length regarding how surprise onside kicks would best be handled in Madden 12. The simplest, though not necessarily most ideal solution, would be to limit it to one attempt per game. Teams don't attempt surprise onside kicks more than once because the opposition is much more aware of the possibility and the risk-reward ratio is not nearly as enticing with field position being so valuable. In an interview with ESPN today Ian Cummings has stated that the limit, which...

Throughout the debate regarding the potential inclusion of surprise onside kicks to Madden 12 there were several factors that came up for consideration. Chief among them if the rate they are attempted in the NFL warranted the development time. Also what is their success rate and how do you implement an element of surprise to a video game? (more…)...
