Point Break Remake in the Works
Generally I'm not someone who gets upset at movies being remade - they don't affect the experience that was had seeing the original and sometimes they turn out better than expected. In the case of 1991's Point Break though, which is beloved by many and was driven by the performances of Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze and break-out direction of Kathryn Bigelow, it feels different and social media has exploded with anger over the news.
Over the years there had been talk of a proper seque...

The buzz-heavy film opens this week in the UK but does not release in the US until December 9th. Starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and Ciaran Hinds Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is adapted from a novel and takes place during the Cold War as a retired spy has to try and track down a Soviet agent within MI6.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases for Week of September 13th
It's a highly anticipated week of releases as Star Wars finally makes it to Blu-ray alongside one of the hits of the summer movie season Thor. There are also a number of television seasons for series with devoted fan bases. My top recommendation of the group is Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (though I'd suggest watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand first as the prequel holds more impact that way).

Eddie Murphy to Host The Oscars
Eddie Murphy has been selected to host the upcoming Academy Awards, which is scheduled to take place on February 26th 2012. Murphy was once nominated - in 2006 for his supporting role in Dreamgirls. He has more Razzie nominations however as his career took a sharp downturn by taking on roles in some truly terrible films. Still he is fondly remembered for his early career and in particular his brilliant stand-up comedy.
Brett Ratner is running the show and chose Murphy, who is in the Novem...
Review: Warrior
Despite MMA's rising prominence it has generally been treated as an "underground" sport in films. That changes with Warrior, a movie that takes the familiar inspirational sports story with family conflict and intertwines that with an MMA tournament that carries large significance for the main characters. The fight action is authentic - though obviously some moments and results were played up for dramatic purposes - and in doing so it presents the sport in a legitimate fashion and one that tr...
DVD/Blu-ray Releases for Week of September 6th
This week of DVD and Blu-ray releases brings one of the best films of the summer in X-Men: First Class. There are also a couple of the best comedies on TV and one of the best dramas with Community, The Office and Fringe. I can confidently recommend all of those as potential purchases. Top to bottom a very strong group of options this week. (more…)...
Thoughts on the Terra Nova Pilot
Terra Nova - the highly anticipated Fox series produced by Steven Spielberg - is set to debut on September 21st after having its premiere delayed from May in order to buy more time to work on visual effects. With those necessary effects making for a hefty budget for a television series, an intriguing concept and setting, and names like Spielberg behind it hopes are high. While the pilot showed a great deal of potential it did nothing to avoid annoyances and contrivances that would be difficu...
