DVD/Blu-ray for Week of February 21st
After a weak set of releases last week there are number of good options this time around on DVD and Blu-ray. Puss in Boots got great reviews and excellent response from audiences, J. Edgar was thought at one time to be an Oscar contender but didn't quite live up to that stature, and Tower Heist got some really respectable reviews for a comedy - there are also the latest seasons of two Showtime comedy series.

Michael Bay Returning for Transformers 4
Even though Michael Bay had previously stated the trilogy would be it for him as the directing Transformers it will come as a surprise to very few that he'll be taking the reigns on Transformers 4. Bay made the announcement on his website yesterday.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon made over $1.2 billion worldwide so Paramount was more than happy to sign him to continue the franchise while at the same time allowing him to make his "passion project" Pain and Gain prior to doing so. The resul...
Review: 21 Jump Street
While 21 Jump Street is based on the popular ’80s TV series it isn’t a straight remake – rather it presents a modern day take on the concept of police officers infiltrating crime rings by going undercover within places like high schools. The film takes a much more comedic angle, while mixing some action in, and it all really works. (more…)...
DVD/Blu-ray for Week of February 14th
It's a lackluster at best lineup of new releases hitting on DVD and Blu-ray this week. The biggest one is The Rum Diary and even that only made $13 million at the box office. The latest season of Beavis and Butt-Head however is well worth picking up.
The Rum Diary (Buy at Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray)
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson. Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) travels to the pri...

Review: Safe House
Safe House finds a young and inexperienced CIA operative (Ryan Reynolds) caught up in a situation where he must protect a dangerous fugitive in his custody (Denzel Washington) from those who are actively trying to kidnap him. Though it does avoid the "bonding" that might be expected that also leaves the characters feeling underdeveloped and detached while the conspiracy angle driving the events is ultimately predictable. (more…)...
Review: Chronicle
Though widely described as a found-footage film Chronicle instead takes on its name as one of three high schoolers who receive mysterious powers record the events that take place throughout. The movie takes on a point-of-view framing rather than becoming about a later discovery as the viewer goes along for the ride that culminates in a surprisingly dark and destructive conclusion.
