Avatar Passes Titanic to Become Biggest Movie Ever
Many considered Titanic's record of $1.835 billion made worldwide to be unbreakable. Today Avatar surpassed that amount and did so in less than six weeks of release to become the highest grossing film of all time. It will soon cruise past $2 billion and there are no indications it will be dropping off any time soon.
Domestically Avatar still trails Titanic by $46 million which sets it up to break that record of $600 million by the end of next weekend. It will likely even see a slight boost ...
New on DVD: Week of January 25
It looks like we have another solid week of movie releases. The much anticipated Michael Jackson's This Is It will hit stores this week, and will most likely sell well. Although ticket sales didn't go as predicated, DVD sales should be pretty high. Other notable releases include Bruce Willis' Surrogates and Ellen Page's Whip It. I enjoyed Whip It, and thought Drew Barrymore did a solid job in her directorial debut. Here is the full release schedule broken up by standard DVD and Blu-ray:

‘Mortal Kombat’ Reboot In The Works
It seems like we have another franchise reboot on our hands. With all comic movies getting reboots, it was only a matter of time before video games did the same. Bloody-Disgusting.com is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has been looking to re-make Mortal Kombat.
Warner Bros. Pictures has been looking to redo Mortal Kombat with Oren Uziel in talks to write. Based on Midway's popular 1992 video game, the franchise follows the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an isla...
Early Thoughts on Best Picture Race
The nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced on February 2nd and the show will take place on March 7th. In advance of that there is a lot of discussion around the chances for each of the top films to win Best Picture. Recent award shows have offered an opportunity to see how voters may be leaning but the results have only made the race appear to be more wide open than anticipated to begin with.
A few weeks ago I looked at The Hurt Locker as being the favorite with Up in the Air ...
Weekend Box Office Results 1/22-1/24
As expected Avatar easily cruised to its six straight weekend win but one of the new movies beat expectations and performed very well. Last week that was The Book of Eli and this week it was Legion. The two other new entries this weekend had disappointing starts.
Avatar was able to make another $36 million which pushed it past The Dark Knight for the second highest grossing movie domestically ever trailing only Titanic. It has now totaled over $550 million. Worldwide though Avatar is expect...
Conan O’Brien Goes Out On Top
The ratings for the final The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien were huge as it drew a 4.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. To put that in perspective it was the highest rated program on all of TV Friday, though that isn't completely surprising given that Friday is generally weak in primetime and the Haiti telethon took over all the networks. However that 4.8 is by far higher than anything NBC has put on the air in primetime lately other than The Biggest Loser which came close with a 4.7 earlier...

The fact that they are holding all these pre-release showings is a sign the studio feels they have a quality movie on their hands and expect positive word of mouth to spr...
Weekend Box Office Predictions 1/22
There is little threat to Avatar capturing the crown for the sixth straight weekend at the box office. It should actually see a boost after winning Best Picture at the Golden Globes. New entries include the family pic Tooth Fairy, the supernatural action-thriller Legion, and the medical drama Extraordinary Measures.
No matter how terrible it looks a family targeted film should never be underestimated and having Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starring only helps. Looking at the opening of compara...
