Below is the list of DVD sales and rentals for the week ending February 14, 2010: Rentrak Top 10 Selling DVDs: 1 Couples Retreat (Universal) 2 The Time Traveler's Wife (New Line) 3 Michael Jackson's This Is It (Sony) 4 Zombieland (Sony) 5 The S...

LA Times reports that Universal Studios is in talks with 'Harold and Kumar' writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, to script American Pie 4. The film would follow 2003's American Wedding, and thankfully won't have anything to do with the handful of DVD titles that have been released since then. At least some of the cast is interested in coming back for the new picture, though sources emphasized that development is early and there are no actor deals in place. Seann William Scott, Jason...
  • Review: Shutter Island

The release of Shutter Island was moved from its originally planned October 2009 date to February 19th however not for the typical reasons that result in delays. Paramount fully believed in the picture but they didn't have the funds to push it for the Academy Awards and star Leonardo DiCaprio was too busy filming the upcoming Inception to promote it. So the decision was made to move it, and though movies that release this early in a year are generally forgotten by Oscar time, Shutter Island wi...
  • Redbox Joins To Delay DVD Releases

I've written on multiple occasions about how the movie studios are making an effort to increase DVD sales with their latest idea being a sales only period before the movies are offered for rental. Warner Brothers was the first to strike a deal with Netflix for a 28 day delay period. Redbox has been seen as a rebel given their disregard for what the studios wanted. This unfortunately has left them on the outside looking in, with Redbox employees having to purchase DVDs at retail stores for f...

Last week Variety reported that Vin Diesel had signed on for another 'Riddick' movie. Today, The Hollywood Reporter reveals the first story details of the film: Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character -- the most wanted man in the galaxy -- left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with "trisons" (three-legged bisons) and "mud demons." He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride ...
  • 3D Screens About To Be Stretched Thin
    by
    Posted February 16th, 2010 at 11:34 am 6 Comments »
With all the discussion about how 3D is taking off and studios jumping on the bandwagon its easy to overlook that theaters still have not converted enough screens to handle demand for more than one new film at a time. The most recent count was approximately 3400 3D screens nationwide out of nearly 40,000 total screens. The cost of converting, being upwards of $100K per screen, has caused hesitation in the past with uncertainty that it would be worth the investment. However leading up to the...
  • New on DVD: Week of February 15

It's a pretty solid week for movie releases. It seems as if every week Gerard Butler is in a new movie. This we can see him along with Jamie Foxx in Law Abiding Citizen. I really thought it was a decent movie even though most critics didn't like it. On the other hand a movie that critics did enjoy was Black Dynamite. The comedy did very well, scoring an 83% fresh rating on Rottentomatoes.com. Here is the full release schedule broken up by standard DVD and Blu-ray: (more…)...
