New on DVD: Week of May 3
This is one of the least impressive weeks for releases that I can remember. Nothing is very appealing, unless you're a fan of 'Batman'. All the 'Batman' films pre Batman Begins will be released on Blu-ray. The only two I'd consider buying though are Batman and Batman Returns. Matthew Vaughn to Direct X-Men: First Class‎?
Deadline.com is reporting that Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is in talks with 20 Century Fox to direct X-Men: First Class. It had been rumored last week that Vaughn was in negotiations with the studio, but coincidentally those rumors were quickly dismissed by Deadline themselves. Anchorman 2 and Zoolander 2 May Be Dead
After a period where they both looked likely to happen, sequels for two films that built cult followings on DVD now appear to have their fates in serious question. Both Anchorman 2 and Zoolander 2 are facing trouble due to budgetary concerns. Late last week Anchorman director Adam McKay tweeted an update on the state of the sequel that he and Will Ferrell had been hoping to achieve. Theatrical Trailer for Piranha 3D
Last week the teaser trailer for Piranha 3D, which had been out in theaters for some time, was made available online. Now Dimension Films has released a new full theatrical trailer for the movie which is set to release on August 27. This is very much a B-level film that is looking to capitalize on the 3D craze by providing some fun with a silly concept. Batman 3 Gets a Release Date
It wasn't until today that the next installment in the Batman franchise was made official as Warner Brothers has announced a planned release date of July 20th 2012 for Batman 3. This is the exact same weekend that The Dark Knight had back in 2008. Production on TDK started approximately 15 months before the movie ended up being released, which means Batman 3 would need to begin pre-production in early 2011 and start filming in the spring to keep a similar time frame. Marvel has released the first image of Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Hemsworth, probably best known for his brief appearance in Star Trek, stars along with Natalie Portman as love interest Jane Foster and Anthony Hopkins as his father Odin with the film directed by Kenneth Branagh. Weekend Box Office Predictions 4/30
Coming off a very flat weekend at the box office one movie hopes to provide a jolt, though it is unlikely to be enough to carry the Top 10 back over the $100 million mark.
