A new patch (1.06) came out earlier this week for MLB 09 The Show that attempted to make adjustments to the schedules and start times as well as fixing a host of small bugs. However from monitoring the response there are some major problems with the patch that have significantly disrupted the community. The biggest issue is that any franchise prior to the patch will not work after downloading it. This could happen with Road to the Show careers as well. Franchises and RTTS would need to be...
  • March Sales: The Show Soars While 2K Sinks

This generation has generally shown that despite increased user base sports games don't see significant growth in sales year over year. They remain relatively stagnant seeing only small increases. NPD just released sales numbers for March and the two baseball titles have blown that pattern out of the water. MLB 09 The Show (PS3) saw huge growth while MLB 2K9 (360) actually dropped when compared their 2008 versions. Last year March sales of MLB 08 The Show didn't make the top 10 so a speci...

The latest roster update for MLB 09 The Show came out earlier today. This is a significant one in that the players who appeared in their first MLB game can now have their real names included. Gary Sheffield also makes his way to the Mets roster. For those of you who can't connect the PS3 online I have uploaded the file to be grabbed here. Unzip it and then transfer the folder to the saves area in the XMB. There are 183 player movements in this update. The highlights as designated by SCEA ...

The Opening Day roster update for MLB 09 The Show came out earlier today. This update includes 210 player movements. For those of you who can't log into SportsConnect and download the update I have uploaded the file here to be retrieved manually. It needs to be unpacked and then the folder transferred over to the PS3 saves. It turns out this might not be the update to settle on if you've been waiting to start a franchise. Gary Sheffield is listed as a free agent instead of being on the Me...

Now that everyone knows how MLB 2K9 and MLB 09 The Show turned out I thought it would be fun to compare some of the player faces from the games. Doing so always results in an interesting post-release discussion. I randomly selected 10 well known players and in comparable situations. All images were taken through the HD PVR via component with 2K9 being the 360 version vs The Show PS3. Which game do you think came out on top the most? (more…)...

At times I've had some difficulty writing about The Show over the last couple months which is actually due to what a quality product 08 was. Usually you can assess the previous iteration and have an idea of what you're looking for out of the next. With 08 the only real glaring weakness was with online play. It is tougher to identify and discuss the improvements to a game when it was already so good to begin with. So that's where I start when evaluating MLB 09 The Show. I already knew it w...

SCEA has always struggled in the area of online play with their MLB franchise. Whether it was the "traffic delays", lag plagued outings, or questionable design decisions there has always been something severely wrong. Early reports heading into release were not encouraging. Now that the game is out I've had additional time to evaluate the online play. Continue on to read through my observations and watch some video examples. (more…)...
