Fans of Sony’s Uncharted video game series were thrilled to learn in late May that director David O. Russell was leaving his position writing and directing the film adaptation. His vision for Uncharted: Drakes Fortune didn’t sound remotely anything like the game and instead seemed to be ripping off themes from National Treasure. Even the casting decisions (Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci) were widely criticized. When Russell departed the project everything about it reset.

Today Sony announced a new director. Neil Burger, who recently helmed the very successful Limitless, has been chosen to write and direct the adaptation. The next question will pertain to the casting and given that Burger is writing the script he could craft it with someone in mind – maybe even Limitless star Bradley Cooper. Mark Wahlberg is unlikely to stay on with the project, though Burger’s ties to De Niro (also from Limitless) could potentially lead to him still being involved in some capacity. At the very least fans have some reason to hope that the property will be treated better under Burger.
