Earlier this month Warner Bros. made it known that they would have to digitally alter the face tattoo on Ed Helms’ character Stu in The Hangover: Part II if a legal dispute with the man who held a copyright on the design could not be resolved in time. Today though the studio announced a settlement with S. Victor Whitmill for an undisclosed amount and no changes will have to be made in the film.
Whitmill had brought a lawsuit shortly before the release of The Hangover: Part II based on the use of the face tattoo he had designed for Mike Tyson. His attempt to stop the release of the movie failed but with a trial date scheduled for next February the studio had decided they couldn’t risk putting it out as-is on DVD/Blu-ray and On-Demand services with the way the case was proceeding. Instead the agreement means both sides walk away happy.
WB certainly wasn’t hurting for the cash as the movie has already become the highest worldwide grossing R-rated comedy of all-time as it nears the $500 million mark.
