The animated film Megamind held off challengers, in particular a solid opening from Unstoppable, in order to win its second straight weekend at the box office. Other new openers had decent but unspectacular starts to their runs.
Megamind came in second on Friday but surged with strong Saturday and Sunday numbers which is typical for family-oriented films. It made $30 million and now has totaled nearly $90 million in just 10 days. Strong results from 3D screens have helped boost its take and that should continue even in the face of Harry Potter opening up next week as plans for that to be 3D were dropped. It should hold up decently well going forward even with that competition arriving.
In second it was the Tony Scott film Unstoppable which is based off a true event. The star power of Denzel Washington and Chris Pine combined with a lack of pure action films out right now helped it to an opening of $23.5 million. Reviews were surprisingly exceptional though I found the movie to be flawed yet enjoyable (my review).
The low budget alien invasion movie Skyline came in fourth with $11.6 million. Reviews were quite bad panning the story and acting but praising the special effects. Made for just $10, but with more spent on marketing, it looks like it will be a financial success but not quite reaching the heights that were hoped for. It was not a bad take especially considering there are no bankable names involved but plans for a sequel seem likely to be scrapped.
In fifth was Morning Glory which carried with it some big names such as Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams and made $9.6 million. This is a film that could possibly show strength in coming weeks as it appeals to an older audience which don’t necessarily feel the need to rush out on opening weekend.
Remaining holdovers of note include Due Date falling a reasonable 52% to $15.5 million and has now banked nearly $60 million in 10 days and For Colored Girls crashing 65% to $6.7 million.
