The numbers are in from Friday and 2012 pulled in 23.7 million. While the movie will be somewhat front-loaded that is still a great opening day take. 2012 now looks to be on its way to a 61 million opening weekend. It will end up as a big success despite the risky 200 million budget as disaster movies always draw well overseas. Worldwide it may gross 150 million or more just this weekend.

Industry expectations for the opening weekend at one time were for 60+ but had been scaled back somewhat as the release approached. Event movies generally are not released in November so it was hard to get a good read on how it would be received. My more optimistic prediction of 64 million appears to have been in the right direction.

While event movies are typically heavy in the opening days and fall off quick, 2012 has some potential as there are really no other films coming up that offer the “escape” that it does. In the summer months blockbusters of this ilk are often just a week or two apart from one another. The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will also provide a boost. After the success seen here with 2012 look for studios to consider releasing event fare in the holiday months now.
