Though it wasn’t a huge splash at the box office Piranha 3D did well enough considering its budget to warrant a sequel as Dimension Films has announced today that development has already begun. No details on the story have been given and it doesn’t appear a script has even been written yet. Though I didn’t completely buy into the movie (review here) it has gotten surprisingly good reviews all around and having been made for just $24 million it is well on its way to becoming profitable.
For those that have seen Piranha 3D the conclusion is very open-ended and actually quite abrupt. It doesn’t sound as though they will just pick up where they left off and instead are intent on introducing the piranhas in a new environment for chaos to ensue once again.
Director Alexandre Aja when asked about the possibilities for a sequel: “We had many ideas. There is the Full Moon Party in Thailand, a huge event with like 200,000 young people from all around the world taking mushrooms and partying on the beach.” That does sound like an intriguing locale and set up, I’m just hoping this the sequel will be filmed in 3D rather than doing post-conversion which turned out pretty worthless for Piranha 3D.
