Fox has announced a new initiative to sell films as digital downloads for $15 several weeks in advance of them reaching release on Blu-ray, DVD, or video-on-demand. The first movie to fall under it will be Prometheus which will be made available for download on September 18 before reaching consumers through other avenues on October 11.
The “Digital HD” program will make films available through many sources including Amazon, iTunes, the Xbox 360, and PS3. Fox’s entire library will be offered through “Digital HD” and in the near future that will include Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Watch, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
This would seem to be a valuable option to have with the $15 cost coming in lower – or right around – the cost of typical digital versions and well below most Blu-ray or DVDs. Being able to nab them weeks ahead of time makes it even more appealing.
