Another player is entering the streaming content arena. Comcast has announced plans to launch Xfinity ‘Streampix’ which will be available free to those with the Comcast “Triple Play” (TV/internet/phone) subscriptions and $5 to those who only get cable TV. Shows including 30 Rock and movies such as Ocean’s Eleven will be available to watch.
This doesn’t appear to an attempt at competing with Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu. Not just will the library of content pale in comparison but given the ‘Streampix’ service will be restricted to those with Comcast there’s no potential for additional sign-ups. Instead the intention would be to act as a bonus for those already tied to the cable company and add value to create another selling point for their bundle plan.
