Considering Justin Verlander had a previous marketing relationship with 2K Sports, and is coming off a spectacular year that had some proclaiming him worthy of the MVP award and a shoo-in for Cy Young, it should be no surprise that the company today named him as the cover athlete for Major League Baseball 2K12. The news was broken earlier on Twitter and the official announcement was made at the MLB Players Choice Awards.
Verlander led the Detroit Tigers to the AL Central championship with the team advancing to the ALCS before falling to the Texas Rangers. On the season he went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and .92 WHIP – and don’t overlook the significance of his presence on Twitter as one of the most followed baseball players in the league. Verlander joins Roy Halladay, Evan Longoria, and Tim Lincecum as the most recent players to grace the cover – in what could very well be the last hurrah for the series as the third party license held by 2K expires at the end of next season.
