As one of the best shows on television, and getting its highest ratings ever, it seemed a sure thing that Breaking Bad would get at least another season in which the story could be wrapped up. There was some level on contention however as AMC first sought out only a six or eight episode order and showrunner Vince Gilligan was seeking a full season or possibly even two. The potential of moving the series to a different network was even raised at one point.
AMC however has now locked up the show for a final 16 episodes. It is uncertain whether that will be presented as one season or split into two. As has been the case with other series having a determined end date can be a very positive thing as it will go out on its own terms rather than risking an unsatisfactory conclusion or losing its luster as ideas begin to run dry.
