Netflix has reportedly landed the original drama series House of Cards by outbidding established networks such as HBO and AMC as reported by Deadline. The series is set to star Kevin Spacey and is executive produced by Spacey and David Fincher with the commitment being for 26 episodes at a cost of over $100 million.

This represents a huge move by Netflix, which has broken through in a big way with their streaming service by offering primarily catalog titles, television content, and Starz programming. Streaming services such as Hulu and the recently launched one by Amazon have added some pressure but this deal is set to take Netflix to a level that the competition has not breached.

House of Cards takes place at the end of Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as prime minister and follows a man who manipulates things and people to achieve his ambitions in the Houses of Parliament. Originally a novel, the BBC adapted it into a miniseries in 1990.
