While the two new openers performed pretty much in line with expectations it was last weekend’s winner Toy Story 3 that again topped the box office. Grown Ups turned in the typical Adam Sandler first weekend and despite a mediocre start Knight and Day still has the potential to be a success.
After just 10 days Toy Story 3 has already raked in $226.5 million after a $59 million second weekend. The 46% drop was higher than most Pixar films see however it also opened much bigger than any ever had. That goes to show just how much interest it had generated leading up to its release in fans of the series. Now it will continue to burn slow over the coming weeks and could even reach $400 million by the end of its run. Currently Finding Nemo is the highest grossing Pixar movie having made $340 million.
It took the runner-up slot but it was another great opening for Adam Sandler. His films of this nature have been astonishingly consistent opening in the mid 30s-40 range and Grown Ups did just that making an impressive $41 million over the weekend. Grown Ups comes out at the top of that range likely having received a boost due to the rest of the cast (primarily Kevin James). Its long term prospects are not as encouraging though it will almost surely break $100 million.
In third place it was the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz action-comedy Knight and Day which pulled in $20.5 million for a five day take of $27.8 million. While the start for Knight and Day is far from exceptional it does have some good things working for it. Word of mouth is positive and that could build over the coming weeks, but the main thing to consider is the worldwide take. Tom Cruise is a huge draw overseas and the movie is expected to play well in many of those markets.
Next Wednesday Twilight: Eclipse storms the box office looking to break the opening day record that was set by New Moon. Then on Thursday the M. Night Shyamalan helmed adaptation of The Last Airbender joins it for the holiday weekend.
