Avatar Sets First Day Sales Record

The highest grossing movie of all-time has now also captured the title of fasting selling Blu-ray in history. Avatar sold 1.5 million copies on its first day of release breaking the record previously held by The Dark Knight. The movie hit stores yesterday with an unorthodox plan of coming out on a Thursday to coincide with Earth Day. It also offered absolutely nothing in the way of extras in an effort to maximize the disc space and provide the best quality video and audio possible.

Early reports are that the movie looks fantastic on Blu-ray. Of course the 3D element is what had observers wondering if the marketplace would reflect the movie’s popularity as having been primarily due to 3D. It appears that hasn’t been the case and fans are buying them up to add to their home library regardless. A special edition with extras is expected out in November and a 3D version possibly next year. I have a copy of the Avatar Blu-ray and will be providing a brief review of it this weekend!
