Just last week news leaked out citing a level of displeasure from Sony towards The Green Hornet. The movie has already been shot and apparently the studio is not happy with the overall tone as well as Seth Rogen in the lead role. Today Sony tweeted that the movie will be released in 3D. Some are already seeing this announcement in the same light as Clash of the Titans, which converted (poorly) but made a ton of money off the higher ticket sales.
This really does just scream of a money grab, especially if the expectations for the movie in the studio’s eyes have been dropping. Theaters will be packed with 3D offerings this holiday season so competition for screens, which will still be in somewhat limited supply, will be even more heavy now. The Green Hornet is slated to release on December 22. (Update) The studio has announced a release date move to January 14. This makes sense for both screen availability and that Sony doesn’t expect good things from the movie.
