There has been a lot of talk leading up to release how Valentine’s Day was able to keep its budget under $50 million despite having a star-studded ensemble cast. The studio was so confident in it becoming a hit that even a sequel is already in the works. The formula has certainly paid off already as Valentine’s Day made $52.4 million over the weekend which included three others making over $20 million.

As anticipated the terrible reviews for Valentine’s Day did nothing to damage its potential. It was primed for a terrific weekend having all the big names involved and a very strong marketing push along with the theme of the weekend which was sure to draw out couples.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lighting Thief came in second with $31.1 million barely edging out the other new entry The Wolfman which drew $30.6 million. Percy Jackson had the best reviews of the three new movies, the built in fans of the novels, and made for the family friendly option this weekend. The Wolfman did well considering the bad buzz that has surrounded it after being delayed for over a year and a half.

All three new films opened above expectations but should see sharp declines over the coming weeks. Percy Jackson however should hold up relatively well as it has the best word-of-mouth and direct competition that will remain light until Alice in Wonderland arrives on March 5th.
