While it may be viewed as an act of desperation with 2K Sports expecting to lose $30-40 million from their baseball gaming division in 2010 they are pulling out all the stops to try and push sales of MLB 2K10. Not only did they announce the $1 million prize for throwing the first perfect game but they are also offering multiple pre-order incentives.
Those who pre-order MLB 2K10 from Gamestop will receive a free Fathead Jr. (MSRP $40) and a coupon for $5 off the purchase of a hat from Lids. Amazon is offering the same Fathead Jr. but will also include $10 off a future video game purchase from the site. MLB 2K10 is actually cheaper on Amazon as well being sold for just $56 instead of the $60 elsewhere.
The tactics being employed here are similar to what was done in 2004 when the line of 2K Sports games was reduced to $20. 2K is doing whatever they can to get the game out to those who may not have bought it otherwise or who may have been turned off by how bad the MLB 2K series has been this generation. They’ll take the hit on the $1 million and pre-order incentives knowing that they’re already going to lose a ton of money this year. However if more people give the game a chance, assuming it is a better quality offering, they could become fans of the series which would pay off for them in the future.
