While the yearly Saw releases have seen deteriorating returns they have remained very profitable. So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that Saw VII may be the last. Co-writer Patrick Melton has now stated that the series was expected to go at least to an eighth entry but the box office take for VI signaled the beginning of the end.
Melton also revealed that Saw VII will be known as Endgame which could be another indication that it will complete the series. They’re planning to make it a big spectacle which includes being filmed in 3D.
I’m not sure I buy them closing off the franchise though, especially given that the 3D could reinvigorate it. If the movie does really well there is no doubt they’ll look to make at least one more. With the low budget for all the Saw movies they’ve been like printing money for the studio. Even though Saw VI is viewed as a disappointment it was made for just $11 million and took in $27 million in the theaters plus the series always does well on DVD.
