zombieland11

As expected Zombieland opened big on Friday raking in 9.4 million. That is slightly above industry expectations which had the movie finishing the weekend in the 18-20 range. The first day totals should represent a higher percent of its weekend take than the norm as the opening Friday night is always the heaviest for a movie such as this. However good word of mouth will keep it solid through the weekend and going forward. Zombieland will complete the weekend with about 24 million very close to my projection of 22 million.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs dropped less than I had anticipated actually beating out the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 double feature and will come in second for the weekend. Meatballs looks on its way to 15 million and Toy Story/2 will see right around 12 million which right on to my prediction. They’re splitting 3D theaters but the thought of going out and having kids sit through three hours of movies they’ve already didn’t present a very exciting scenario for parents.

The three other new releases came in with light returns. The Invention of Lying will finish the weekend with about seven million while Capitalism: A Love Story could get as high as five million. Whip It turns out to be the bomb. I thought there was some female appeal there but apparently there was very little interest from anyone in the film. It looks finish the weekend with four million.
