It was Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, not one of the new releases, that topped the box office for the weekend of 9/25. Meatballs dropped a remarkably low 20% from last week to haul in 24.6 million and take the crown for consecutive weeks. Family targeted pictures generally drop off less than other genres, but a lack of competition along with the 3D and IMAX hauls made for an especially strong second weekend.
Coming in second was the Bruce Willis vehicle Surrogates which pulled in 15 million. The high-concept movie had an appealing marketing campaign but mixed reaction from reviewers and questionable word of mouth resulted in a so-so weekend take. It came in a little under my 18 million prediction. For our review of Surrogates click here.
Fame drew the very amount I predicted cashing in with a mediocre 10 million. There just wasn’t much appeal to the movie which lacked star power and didn’t offer any particularly compelling reason to go see it.
Meanwhile it was Pandorum that came out the loser of the weekend as it only opened with 4.4 million, well under the 9 million I had predicted. The horror movie didn’t connect with the necessary segment of the audience who have had several other dark options to choose from over the last month. For our review of Pandorum click here.
