Representing the first big night of season premieres, Thursday September 17th had the return of Fringe, Survivor, and The Office. It also introduced the new show Community which follows The Office on NBC.

Fringe quickly became one of my favorite shows in its first season, and last night it kept that momentum going. The ending brought about another twist that, while I thought it might happen because of an earlier scene it still rattled me based on the impact it will have. The opener for the 19th season of Survivor was one of the more entertaining ones I can remember with the introduction of Russell, who is shaping up to be the most conniving villain in the series history which is saying something.

I also enjoyed the two comedies. If I’ve had a problem with The Office in the past it’s because of throw-away episodes that do nothing to develop the characters or advance the story. The premiere had the usual great opening and carried that through with the false rumor spreading. It’ll be interesting to see how well the pregnancy storyline will fit in with the comedic tone though I already liked how Michael reacted to not being told immediately about it. For a pilot I thought Community showed some promise. Generally pilots for comedies tend to fall a little flat because the characters have to be introduced and it takes a few episodes to flesh them out and get the show into a rhythm. The first season (which was only six episodes) of The Office is a good example of that.

What shows did you watch last night and what did you think of them? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
